Electronic Systems Controls Technical Specialist

Cummins•Columbus, IN
•$102,225 - $132,775

About The Position

This controls-focused position develops and tailors electronic control systems for Cummins products and customer applications, particularly next-generation electrified powertrains for the commercial vehicle industry. The role translates product and stakeholder requirements into functional requirements, control algorithms, designs, and validation tests. It configures and tunes controls and performs comprehensive validation of integrated hardware and software systems. The specialist leads controls development for one or more Product Proceeding Technology (PPT) projects, helps establish technical direction and best practices for powertrain and electrification controls, and advances systems and controls development processes and tools. Work includes concept development, powertrain and controls architecture studies, model development and validation, performance and emissions studies, hardware-in-the-loop testing, and demonstrations. The role investigates and resolves electronic application and systems problems, documents findings, and contributes technical leadership across project teams and functional disciplines. The position also coordinates work among technicians and temporary student employees, transfers knowledge to less-experienced engineers, and reviews their work. It collaborates with cross-functional teams and may provide independent leadership on smaller business-impact projects or ownership of complex components, products, systems, or services.

Requirements

  • Prior Senior- or Lead-Engineer-equivalent work experience in a relevant discipline, with a demonstrated track record of technical problem solving and quality decision making.
  • A PhD degree; the educational program is open to Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering.
  • Experience leading control algorithm or system development for a small project or a subset of a larger project.
  • Expertise in advanced control methodologies, simulation-based controls development, and verification and validation in test cells and test vehicles.
  • Excellent coding and simulation skills and a good understanding of powertrain components, system integration, testing, and debugging, including HIL, test-cell, and test-vehicle work.
  • High analytical ability and a systematic approach to new problems.
  • Ability to investigate electronic application and systems problems, recommend actions, own problem resolution, and document results.
  • For U.S. Early Careers eligibility, external candidates must be within two years of completing their highest degree at an accredited U.S. college or university and currently reside within the continental U.S.
  • For F-1 visa students in U.S.-based roles, approved CPT or OPT related to the degree and authorized by the university is required before the assignment begins.
  • The position may require licensing for compliance with export controls or sanctions regulations.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of MS Office tools.
  • Master's degree relevant to the discipline area may be required for select roles.

Responsibilities

  • Develop electronic open- and closed-loop controls and diagnostics for applications such as internal combustion engines, power systems, powertrains, and electrified powertrains.
  • Translate customer and stakeholder needs into verifiable functional requirements, define acceptance criteria, design control algorithms, tune them, and create tests to validate performance.
  • Lead control system development for one or more PPT projects, including coordination of project plans, resources, and handoff materials.
  • Define control methodologies, processes, and best practices for powertrain and electrification controls, and help set technical direction across multiple R&T projects.
  • Lead analysis and controls development for next-generation electrified powertrains, including concept development, architecture entitlement studies, model development and validation, performance and emissions studies, HIL testing, and demonstrations.
  • Configure and tune controls and validate integrated hardware and software systems using simulation, calibration, troubleshooting, and product life-maintenance processes.
  • Investigate electronic application and systems problems, recommend actions, own problem resolution, and document results.
  • Contribute to electronic and electrical controls and diagnostic design, requirements, calibration, and test decisions that affect product quality and performance.
  • Use modeling, simulation, analytical methods, and physical testing to assess product capability, verify designs, and validate requirements.
  • Identify and mitigate potential product failure modes and solve product problems through data-based solutions and root-cause analysis.
  • Improve controls development processes and tools across functional disciplines, including system specification, modeling and simulation, calibration, DVP&R, and troubleshooting.
  • Review the work of less-experienced controls engineers to support robust, reusable, and efficient designs.
  • Coordinate and direct work among technicians and temporary student employees, transfer knowledge to less-experienced engineers, and influence technical direction within project teams.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams and provide independent leadership on smaller business-impact projects or ownership of complex components, products, systems, or services.
  • Lead development and improvement of work processes and systems across a functional discipline area within a business unit site.
