About The Position

The Illinois Department of Corrections is looking for a candidate to serve as an Electrician at Sheridan Correctional Center. The ideal candidate will perform routine maintenance inspections on the electrical equipment in all buildings at the facility. In addition, they will repair, maintain and install electrical systems at the facility, and seat and replace brushes. We encourage all qualified applicants to apply.

Requirements

  • Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to completion of four (4) years of high school.
  • Requires successful completion of a recognized electrician apprenticeship program and four (4) years full-time journey level electrician experience; or eight (8) years of full-time journey level electrician experience.
  • Requires ability to pass the IDOC/IDJJ background check.
  • Requires ability to pass a drug screen.
  • Required to utilize digital technology, tools, platforms, and processes in managing and supporting various digital enhancements for greater efficiency, productivity, and digital transformation efforts within the department.
  • This position requires the ability to work at heights, including on ladders, scaffolding, aerial lifts, or elevated platforms, while adhering to all safety regulations and using appropriate fall protection measures.
  • Requires ability to stand for long periods, and move heavy equipment, materials, structures and furniture up to 50 pounds independently, and up to 75-100 pounds with assistance.
  • Applicants are required to abide by all vaccine and/or other medical standards as set out by the employer.

Nice To Haves

  • Prefers at least five (5) years of experience working with established national, state and local electrical codes.
  • Prefers at least five (5) years of experience working with the tools (such as voltmeters, ammeters, ohmmeters and other calibration and testing equipment and apparatus), methods, and standard practices of the trade.
  • Prefers at least five (5) years of experience inspecting and perceiving unsafe or faulty conditions in production, transmission and utilization of electricity.
  • Prefers at least five (5) years of experience reading, interpreting and working from blueprints, simple sketches, and drawings.
  • Prefers at least five (5) years of experience making rough sketches and estimating time, labor, and materials necessary to complete work orders.
  • Prefers at least five (5) years of experience maintaining records related to the work.
  • Prefers at least five (5) years of experience instructing and/or directing trades helpers, individuals in custody, and/or unskilled workers or semi-skilled workers.
  • Prefers completion of current OSHA 10 training or higher.

Responsibilities

  • Performs routine maintenance inspections in accordance with facility work order system and master craft/routine/ cycle lists.
  • Repairs and maintains electric switchboards, panels, electrical components of air conditioners and other apparatus utilizing electricity or its effects.
  • Installs and maintains electrical systems.
  • Seats and replaces brushes.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of duties enumerated above.
