About The Position

The Illinois Department of Corrections (IDOC) is seeking a skilled locksmith to operate the locksmith's shop at Decatur Correctional Center. This role involves inspecting equipment, monitoring safety and security related to locksmith duties, and maintaining accurate inventory and accountability of all tools under supervision. The position requires adherence to established procedures and performing other assigned duties. Requirements

  • Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to completion of four (4) years of high school.
  • Requires a minimum of two (2) years of experience as a skilled locksmith.
  • Requires completion of an approved course in guard training within six (6) months of employment.
  • Requires ability to pass the IDOC/IDJJ background check.
  • Requires ability to pass a drug screen.
  • Required to utilize digital technology, tools, platforms, and processes in managing and supporting various digital enhancements for greater efficiency, productivity, and digital transformation efforts within the department.
  • This position requires the ability to work at heights, including on ladders, scaffolding, aerial lifts, or elevated platforms, while adhering to all safety regulations and using appropriate fall protection measures.
  • Applicants are required to abide by all vaccine and/or other medical standards as set out by the employer.

Nice To Haves

  • Prefers at least three (3) years of work experience installing and maintaining locking systems and devices.
  • Prefers at least three (3) years of work experience utilizing locksmith tools and materials.
  • Prefers at least three (3) years of work experience preparing tool inventory reports.
  • Prefers at least three (3) years of work experience reading, interpreting, and working from plans, simple drawings, and/or sketches.
  • Prefers at least two (2) years of work experience preparing and submitting estimates for materials needed.
  • Prefers completion of current OSHA 10 training or higher.

Responsibilities

  • Functions as a skilled locksmith at the correctional facility.
  • Operates locksmith’s shop.
  • Inspects all equipment to ensure that all required tools are in operating condition.
  • Monitors safety and security of institution as related to the performance of assigned duties and knowledge of information affecting the operation and security of the institution.
  • Maintains accurate inventory and daily accountability of all tools under their supervision as outlined in established procedures.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
