About The Position

An Electrical Mechanic II performs skilled electrical installation, maintenance, and repair work. This role involves leading electrical mechanics and laborers but does not include full supervisory duties. Incumbents receive moderate supervision from a technical superior. Employees work a conventional workweek which may include evenings, weekends, and holidays on a rotating basis, and are subject to 24-hour call-back for emergencies. Work is performed in a workshop and at repair sites with occasional exposure to high voltage, inclement weather, heat, heights, paint and welding fumes, and cramped and dusty workspaces. The job requires lifting, bending, standing, and climbing.

Requirements

  • Graduated from an accredited high school or possession of a GED certification.
  • Three years of experience in electrical maintenance, installation, repair or building construction electrical work.
  • Valid Maryland Class C Noncommercial driver's license, or an equivalent out-of-state driver's license acceptable to the Office of Risk Management.
  • Knowledge of the methods, techniques, tools and equipment used in the maintenance, installation, and repair of electrical lighting and distribution systems and other standard electrical equipment.
  • Knowledge of current national electrical codes and standards.
  • Journeyman skill in the trade.
  • Ability to operate hand and power tools used in electrical work.
  • Ability to layout routine electrical systems and to read and interpret sketches and drawings.
  • Ability to make estimates of time and materials.
  • Ability to train and deal with others effectively.
  • Ability to complete routine forms and maintain records.
  • Six months of additional experience in electrical maintenance, installation or repair work or in building construction electrical work may be substituted for each year of the high school or GED requirement.
  • Completion of one (1) year of the required coursework in an electrical curriculum in an accredited high school or vocational school may be substituted for six months of the experience requirement.
  • Successful completion of an electrical mechanic apprenticeship program registered with the Maryland Apprentice and Training Council may be substituted for one (1) year of the experience requirement.
  • Maryland Class A Commercial Driver’s License, or an equivalent out-of-state driver’s license acceptable to the Office of Risk Management is required.
  • Eligibility to obtain a Baltimore City driver’s permit is required.
  • Authorization for a Criminal Background Check and/or Fingerprint must be successfully completed.
  • Completion of a mandatory six-month probation period.
