About The Position

Alaka’i is seeking a hands-on Electrical Integration Engineer to support development of advanced hydrogen-powered UAS. The role spans the electrical system development lifecycle, from electrical architecture and schematic design through wire harness fabrication, hardware integration, testing, and troubleshooting. The engineer will work with mechanical, propulsion, avionics, and flight-test teams to develop reliable electrical systems for unmanned aircraft. This is a hands-on R&D position involving the conversion of electrical designs into functioning hardware, integration problem-solving, and iterative development as aircraft designs evolve. The role includes developing and maintaining electrical schematics, wiring and interconnect diagrams, and system documentation; contributing to aircraft electrical architecture; selecting components and related hardware; fabricating and integrating custom harnesses and electrical components; and developing and conducting tests on components, subsystems, and integrated aircraft systems. The engineer will diagnose electrical faults, document results, identify root causes, implement corrective actions, and verify fixes. The position is located in Stow, Massachusetts. Alaka’i does not provide visa sponsorship. Non-U.S. persons must qualify for and be granted U.S. export licenses to access export-controlled technology, commodities, and software.

Requirements

  • Practical experience designing, assembling, integrating, or testing electrical and electronic systems.
  • Ability to read, create, and modify electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and connector pinout documentation.
  • Hands-on proficiency with soldering, crimping, connector termination, wire preparation, and harness assembly.
  • Experience using oscilloscopes, digital multimeters, and other electrical test and measurement equipment.
  • Ability to systematically troubleshoot electrical systems and identify root causes of hardware failures.
  • Understanding of DC power distribution, circuit protection, grounding, wire sizing, connectors, and basic electrical safety.
  • Strong attention to detail and an organized approach to electrical documentation, assembly, and testing.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively in a fast-paced R&D environment.
  • Must be able to lift up to 30 pounds at a time.

Nice To Haves

  • PCB design and integration experience.
  • Familiarity with electric powertrains, including lithium batteries, electric motors, electronic speed controllers, DC-DC conversion, and power distribution.
  • UAV avionics and CAN systems experience.
  • Hardware-in-the-loop testing experience.
  • Experience with CAD-based electrical schematic tools and harness documentation.
  • Experience supporting prototype integration, ground testing, or flight testing.
  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical or robotics engineering preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, interconnect diagrams, and electrical system documentation.
  • Contribute to aircraft electrical architecture, including power distribution, circuit protection, grounding, connectors, and component interfaces.
  • Select electrical components, connectors, wire gauges, protective devices, and related hardware based on system requirements.
  • Collaborate with the engineering team to review and improve electrical designs throughout prototype development.
  • Fabricate, assemble, and modify custom wire harnesses for aircraft prototypes and laboratory test systems.
  • Perform wire preparation, soldering, crimping, connector assembly, pinning, splicing, and termination in accordance with applicable workmanship requirements.
  • Integrate electrical components, sensors, actuators, motors, controllers, batteries, power converters, and avionics into aircraft and test rigs.
  • Develop harness layouts, cable routing, strain relief, mounting provisions, and serviceable electrical interfaces with mechanical designers.
  • Produce and maintain harness drawings, pinout tables, cable labels, and assembly documentation.
  • Develop and execute electrical test procedures for components, subsystems, and integrated aircraft systems.
  • Use laboratory instrumentation to characterize and validate hardware.
  • Diagnose electrical faults, including wiring errors, intermittent connections, voltage drops, grounding issues, signal integrity problems, and power-system faults.
  • Support bench testing, hardware-in-the-loop activities, ground testing, and aircraft-level integration and test.
  • Document test results, identify root causes, implement corrective actions, and verify fixes.
  • Work with engineers to resolve unexpected behavior and improve system reliability through iterative testing.
