Electrical Engineer - Multiple Levels

AeroVironment•Germantown, MD
•$75,000 - $160,000•Onsite

About The Position

AeroVironment is hiring Electrical Engineers at multiple experience levels to work onsite in Albuquerque, New Mexico, or Germantown, Maryland. Engineers support the design, development, integration, verification, and production of advanced aerospace, beam-control, RF, and electromechanical systems. Assignments may involve analog, digital, mixed-signal, RF, power, embedded, high-speed electronic systems, and ruggedized interconnect solutions. Level and responsibilities depend on qualifications, experience, and program needs. The role collaborates with systems, mechanical, RF, optical, software, manufacturing, quality, test, and program management teams across the product lifecycle, from requirements development and concept design through prototyping, qualification, production, and field support. More experienced engineers may lead technical activities or special projects and provide direction or mentorship. The position may require occasional travel to customer, supplier, test, or field locations. The position requires access to ITAR- and/or EAR-controlled information, so applicants may need to provide documentation verifying U.S. person status. Some roles require current U.S. citizenship due to contract requirements. The stated salary range is $75,000 to $160,000, with compensation determined by level, experience, location, and other factors.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
  • Relevant experience in electrical design, analysis, hardware development, cable assembly design, integration, verification, or test; level is determined by qualifications and experience.
  • Familiarity with electrical engineering fundamentals, circuit design, schematic development, wiring diagrams, and laboratory test equipment.
  • Ability to analyze technical data, troubleshoot hardware, and communicate clear conclusions and recommendations.
  • Strong problem-solving, communication, organizational, and technical documentation skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. security clearance if required by the program.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with ruggedized cable assemblies, wire harnesses, connectors, backshells, shielding, grounding, strain relief, or interconnect systems.
  • Experience designing cable assemblies for harsh environments involving vibration, shock, temperature extremes, moisture, dust, chemicals, or electromagnetic interference.
  • Experience with RF, analog, digital, mixed-signal, power, embedded, or high-speed electronic systems.
  • Experience with radar, satellite communications, phased arrays, beam-control systems, or aerospace and defense products.
  • Familiarity with PCB design tools, SPICE-based simulation, MATLAB, Python, FPGA development, or embedded systems.
  • Experience with RF test equipment, hardware integration, environmental testing, or qualification testing.
  • Knowledge of signal integrity, power integrity, electromagnetic compatibility, grounding, shielding, and thermal considerations.
  • Experience with prototype development, low-rate production, manufacturing transition, supplier coordination, or fielded systems.
  • Familiarity with requirements management, configuration management, PLM/PDM, or engineering change systems.
  • Experience working in an AS9100, ISO 9001, or other regulated engineering environment.
  • Experience leading technical tasks, conducting trade studies, or mentoring engineers.
  • Current and active U.S. Department of Defense security clearance.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, analyze, integrate, and test analog, digital, mixed-signal, RF, power, and embedded electronic systems.
  • Design and develop ruggedized cable assemblies, wire harnesses, and interconnect solutions for harsh and mission-critical environments.
  • Define cable assembly requirements, including electrical performance, shielding, grounding, connector selection, routing, bend radius, strain relief, sealing, and environmental durability.
  • Select cables, connectors, backshells, protective sleeving, conduit, and other interconnect components based on electrical, mechanical, environmental, and manufacturing requirements.
  • Create and maintain schematics, wiring diagrams, cable assembly drawings, PCB layouts, interface documentation, bills of materials, and technical data packages.
  • Perform circuit analysis, simulation, component selection, power analysis, worst-case analysis, and signal- or power-integrity assessments.
  • Support hardware development from requirements and concept through design, prototyping, integration, verification, qualification, production, and field support.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to define electrical and mechanical interfaces, resolve technical issues, and meet system performance requirements.
  • Develop and execute test plans, verification procedures, and acceptance criteria for electronic hardware and cable assemblies.
  • Support hardware bring-up, troubleshooting, failure analysis, root-cause investigations, and corrective actions.
  • Use laboratory equipment, including oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, signal generators, network analyzers, power supplies, and data-acquisition systems.
  • Participate in design, requirements, test-readiness, production-readiness, and customer technical reviews.
  • Support configuration management, revision control, engineering change processes, and product lifecycle management.
  • Work with manufacturing and suppliers to resolve production issues and improve cost, quality, reliability, manufacturability, and production readiness.
