Andrenam•Torrance, CA
•$30 - $40•Onsite

About The Position

Andrenam is seeking an Electrical Engineer Intern to join its electrical design team for a hands-on internship focused on troubleshooting and testing sensing and autonomy systems deployed in the ocean. The internship is planned for summer 2027, with a spring 2027 start also possible for the right candidate. The intern will take on scoped projects supporting core hardware, work alongside design engineers, and receive regular feedback and mentorship. The work provides experience designing electronics for performance, reliability, and manufacturability in harsh marine environments. The intern will help bring up, test, and debug boards and assemblies; diagnose hardware failures; support hardware-software integration and system-level troubleshooting; and develop and run test procedures. They will also support core board and system projects, work from schematics and layouts, and document procedures, results, and fixes. The role is full-time and onsite at Andrenam’s Torrance, California office. Andrenam builds sonar and sensing systems for maritime applications, including autonomy and defense. The company describes itself as mission-driven and offers competitive salary, lunch and snacks in the office, and access to a distinctive technology, maritime, and defense work environment. The posting also describes benefits for full-time employees, including medical, vision, and dental coverage and access to a 401(k) retirement plan. The role may require access to export-controlled information; candidates must meet the stated U.S. citizenship, permanent-resident, protected-individual, or export-authorization criteria without sponsorship for an export license.

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing or recently completed a degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, mechatronics, or a related field.
  • Hands-on hardware experience through coursework, personal projects, or student engineering teams, including at least one project the candidate can explain in detail.
  • Comfort with laboratory tools such as oscilloscopes, multimeters, logic analyzers, and soldering irons.
  • Exposure to PCB design, hardware troubleshooting, or CAD.
  • Strong problem-solving instincts and willingness to investigate unfamiliar problems.
  • Clear communication skills and a track record of working well with others.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3), or eligible to obtain required U.S. Department of State authorizations without sponsorship for an export license, if access to export-controlled information is required.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience designing simple circuits or PCBs using tools such as KiCad or Altium through personal, academic, or internship projects.
  • Familiarity with microcontrollers such as STM32 or ESP32, or communication protocols such as UART, SPI, I2C, or CAN.
  • Experience on a student engineering team, such as underwater robotics, SAE, or similar design-build competitions.
  • Interest in maritime systems, autonomy, or defense technology.

Responsibilities

  • Bring up, test, and debug boards and assemblies, including performance and reliability testing.
  • Diagnose hardware failures, identify root causes with the team, and verify fixes.
  • Support integration of hardware with software and participate in system-level troubleshooting.
  • Help develop and run test procedures to improve hardware reliability in the field.
  • Support hardware projects related to core boards and systems under guidance from the design team.
  • Read and work from schematics and layouts to trace issues and suggest improvements.
  • Work closely with electrical engineers, take feedback, and iterate quickly.
  • Communicate progress clearly and ask questions early.
  • Document test procedures, results, and fixes so the team can build on the work after the internship.

Benefits

  • Competitive salary.
  • Lunch and snacks provided in the office.
  • Access to a unique work environment blending technology, maritime, and defense.
  • Medical, vision, and dental coverage for full-time employees.
