About The Position

As a titled Electrical Engineer (industry equivalent: Electrical Engineer 1/2), you will join Oceaneering Aerospace and Defense Technologies’ engineering team within the Oceaneering Technologies group. You will perform activities associated with developing and implementing complex power and control systems for unique underwater robotic and electromechanical systems, primarily for U.S. Navy and other U.S. Department of Defense customers. Projects are often one-of-a-kind and involve work beyond analysis and design, including assisting with building and testing engineering designs. The role involves designing and analyzing electrical components and subsystems, collaborating with engineers across disciplines, participating in design reviews, and taking responsibility for results with substantial autonomy while recognizing when assistance is needed. It is an entry-level opportunity for a candidate seeking practical experience across the electrical engineering process, from concept and simulation through design, assembly, integration, troubleshooting, and testing.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science or advanced degree from an accredited university in Electrical or Electronic Engineering, or a related curriculum with an electrical concentration such as Computer Engineering or Robotics Engineering.
  • Entry-level knowledge and desire to gain practical experience in the electrical engineering process, including concept development, analysis, simulation, design, drawing, assembly, integration, troubleshooting, and testing of complex electrical, electromechanical, automated, robotic, and underwater vehicle systems.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Government Department of Defense security clearance; an active clearance is preferred but not required.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen.
  • Ability to select and integrate commercial off-the-shelf equipment and design interfaces.
  • Ability to select and size electrical and electronic components and wiring devices.
  • Ability to interface embedded microprocessor and single-board-computer control systems, including defining signals and selecting sensors, actuators, and I/O.
  • Knowledge of data communications interfaces and protocols such as Ethernet, USB, RS-232, RS-422, RS-485, SPI, I2C, and CAN.
  • Ability to design DC power systems and estimate power and energy requirements.
  • Ability to design wiring, cabling, and grounding to minimize electrical noise and EMI.
  • Electrical drawing and drafting skills, including creating and reading schematics, wiring diagrams, cable drawings, and system diagrams.
  • Experience using electronic test equipment such as multimeters, oscilloscopes, power analyzers, spectrum analyzers, communications analyzers, CTDR, OTDR, and optical power meters.
  • Experience with CAD, simulation, and analysis software such as Altium Designer, SPICE, AutoCAD, SolidWorks, SolidWorks Electrical, MathCAD, or MATLAB.
  • Proficiency with office productivity software such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, including the ability to document, convey, and present engineering concepts and products.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge or experience in the marine industry, preferably underwater, and with ROVs, AUVs, sonar, and related robotic or electromechanical systems.
  • Knowledge of applicable professional, technical, and military standards, including IEEE, ANSI, IEC, ISO, NEMA, NEC, and MIL standards.
  • Practical technician skills such as assembly, wiring, soldering, and cabling.
  • Knowledge or experience with fiber optics.
  • Knowledge or experience with PCB design.
  • Knowledge or experience with brushless motor drives, robotics, and automation.
  • Knowledge or experience designing, analyzing, and tuning closed-loop feedback control systems.
  • Knowledge or experience with low- to medium-voltage single- and three-phase power systems, including 120, 240, 480, and 3000+ VAC.
  • Knowledge or experience applying machine safety systems and standards.
  • Knowledge or experience with programming languages or script writing for software or firmware.
  • Ability and flexibility to travel occasionally, typically on pre-planned trips of up to one to two weeks, within or outside the U.S. or offshore aboard a boat.

Responsibilities

  • Design and analyze components and subsystems for underwater robotic and electromechanical systems.
  • Develop appropriate subsystem designs from requirements and complete assigned work, making decisions under limited supervision in both individual and team settings.
  • Apply technical judgment, creativity, initiative, attention to detail, and a system-level perspective.
  • Prepare for and participate in regular design reviews.
  • Collaborate with mechanical, software, systems, and other engineers to solve problems and architect working systems.
  • Take responsibility for results and work autonomously while seeking assistance when appropriate.
  • Build and test designs and expand technical expertise and responsibilities.
  • Select and integrate commercial off-the-shelf equipment and design required interfaces.
  • Select and size electrical and electronic components, wiring devices, and related equipment.
  • Interface embedded microprocessor and single-board-computer control systems, define signals and I/O, and select sensors and actuators; develop custom electrical designs when commercial components are inadequate or unavailable.
  • Design, interface, translate, and integrate data communications signals, media, and protocols, including in potentially high-noise environments.
  • Design DC power systems and calculate or estimate system power and energy requirements.
  • Design wiring, cabling, and grounding to minimize electrical noise and electromagnetic interference as appropriate.
  • Create and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, cable drawings, system cabling diagrams, and block diagrams.
  • Use electronic test equipment and CAD, simulation, and analysis software.
  • Document, communicate, and present engineering concepts and products to team members and customers.
