Electrical Engineer I

Oceaneering•Hanover, MD

About The Position

Serve as a member of the Oceaneering Aerospace and Defense Technologies (ADTECH) engineering team within Oceaneering Technologies (OTECH), developing and implementing complex power and control systems for underwater robotic and electromechanical systems. Projects are typically one-of-a-kind and support US Navy and other US Government Department of Defense customers. The work includes analysis and design as well as hands-on assistance with building and testing systems. The Electrical Engineer performs electrical design and analysis for components and subsystems, develops designs from subsystem requirements, and completes tasks with limited supervision. The role calls for sound technical judgment, creativity, initiative, attention to detail, and a system-level perspective. The engineer participates in design reviews and collaborates with mechanical, software, systems, and other engineering disciplines to develop and troubleshoot working systems. The position offers responsibility and autonomy, with an expectation to seek assistance when appropriate and to expand technical skills and responsibilities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science or advanced degree from an accredited university in Electrical/Electronic Engineering or a related field with an Electrical concentration, such as Computer Engineering or Robotics Engineering.
  • Entry-level candidate with knowledge of and desire to gain practical experience across the electrical engineering process, including concept development, analysis, simulation, design, drawing, assembly, integration, troubleshooting, and testing of complex electrical, electromechanical, automated, robotic, and underwater vehicle systems.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a United States Government Department of Defense Security Clearance; an active clearance is preferred but not required.
  • Must be a US citizen.
  • Ability to select and integrate Commercial Off-the-Shelf equipment and design necessary interfaces.
  • Ability to select and size electrical and electronic components and wiring devices, including signal-conditioning equipment, power supplies, control and switching devices, safety devices, terminal blocks, connectors, wiring, and cabling.
  • Ability to select and interface embedded microprocessor and single-board-computer control-system components, define signals, sensors, and actuators, select I/O, and develop custom electrical designs when COTS components are inadequate or unavailable.
  • Ability to design and integrate data communications interfaces and media, including Ethernet, USB, RS-232, RS-422, RS-485, SPI, I2C, and CAN, including in potentially high-noise environments.
  • Knowledge of DC power system design and ability to calculate and estimate system power and energy requirements.
  • Ability to design wiring, cabling, and grounding to minimize electrical noise and EMI as appropriate.
  • Good electrical drawing and drafting skills, including creating and reading schematics, wiring and cable drawings, and system cabling and block diagrams.
  • Experience using electronic test equipment such as multimeters, oscilloscopes, power analyzers, spectrum analyzers, communications analyzers, CTDR, OTDR, and optical power meters.
  • Experience with CAD, simulation, and analysis software such as Altium Designer, SPICE, AutoCAD, SolidWorks, SolidWorks Electrical, MathCAD, or MATLAB.
  • Proficiency with common office productivity software such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Good written and oral communication skills, including the ability to document, convey, and present engineering concepts and products to team members and customers.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge or experience in the marine industry, particularly underwater technologies, including ROVs, AUVs, robotic and electromechanical systems, or sonar systems.
  • Knowledge of applicable professional, technical, and military standards, including IEEE, ANSI, IEC, ISO, NEMA, NEC, and MIL standards.
  • Practical technician skills such as assembly, wiring, soldering, and cabling.
  • Knowledge or experience with fiber optics.
  • Knowledge or experience with printed circuit board design.
  • Knowledge or experience with brushless motor drives, robotics, and automation.
  • Knowledge or experience designing, analyzing, and tuning closed-loop feedback control systems.
  • Knowledge or experience with low- to medium-voltage, single- and three-phase power systems, including 120, 240, 480, and 3000+ VAC.
  • Knowledge or experience applying machine safety systems and standards.
  • Knowledge or experience with programming languages or script writing for software or firmware.
  • Ability and flexibility to travel occasionally, typically on pre-planned trips of up to one to two weeks, within or outside the US or offshore aboard a boat.

Responsibilities

  • Design and analyze electrical components and subsystems for underwater robotic and electromechanical systems.
  • Develop subsystem designs from requirements and complete assigned work with limited supervision, independently and as part of a team.
  • Participate in design reviews.
  • Collaborate with mechanical, software, systems, and other engineers to solve problems and architect working systems.
  • Assist with building, integrating, troubleshooting, and testing electrical and electromechanical designs.
