Electrical Construction Designer III

Rosendin•Sterling, VA

About The Position

Designer III is a senior designer position responsible for developing electrical designs that show equipment and device layouts and branch circuiting for power, lighting, and auxiliary drawings. The role provides calculations and documentation for lighting and power systems and creates details that clarify design intent for construction. The Designer III works closely with the project manager and project lead engineer, takes the design lead on projects, and coordinates with clients, architects, and engineers in other disciplines to complete drawings. The position leads lighting and controls design, electrical trade coordination, and design document development, while providing direction and training to other designers and engineers. It also includes fieldwork and surveying, electrical room layout, project meeting participation, and checking the accuracy and completeness of design work. Travel may be up to 20%, excluding local field visits. Work is conducted primarily indoors and includes periods of sitting, standing, walking, typing, carrying, pushing, and bending, with occasional lifting of up to 40 pounds.

  • Advanced knowledge of NFPA and local building codes.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and illuminance software.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and projects and adjust to changing priorities as directed by supervisors.
  • Ability to calculate illumination levels, create layouts based on calculations, and complete energy compliance documentation for drawings.
  • Effective fieldwork and surveying skills.
  • Knowledge of load summaries and power calculations.
  • Fluency in 3D modeling and Revit, with a passing score on the Design/BIM assessment.
  • Ability to work under time pressure and adapt positively to changing requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Mark up branch-circuit lighting and power plans and complete panelboard schedules with moderate supervision.
  • Perform energy code calculations and documentation and address local jurisdiction energy requirements with little supervision.
  • Apply company standards for wire sizing, transformer feeders, and protection using published schedules.
  • Calculate illumination levels and lay out fixtures with minimal supervision.
  • Lead lighting design and controls using owner requirements and RFP information to determine appropriate solutions, and supervise other designers implementing the design.
  • Calculate power loads, size feeders, and determine estimated distribution-system demand load summaries.
  • Lead coordination with other trades, including architectural, structural, mechanical, plumbing, fire protection, vertical transportation, kitchen equipment, and OFCI systems; direct and obtain information and requirements for electrical installation.
  • Create details that define installation for construction.
  • Perform short-circuit and thermal calculations as overseen by the Analytics group.
  • Apply National Electrical Code and local jurisdiction requirements, including for underground distribution, grounding, overcurrent protection, and emergency and standby systems.
  • Attend project design team meetings and interface with project team members, particularly clients, architects, and mechanical contractors or engineers.
  • Coordinate design criteria, budget, and schedule with the Rosendin Operations Project Manager and Engineering Team Lead.
  • Back-check own work and the work of supervised designers for accuracy and completeness before passing it on.
  • Perform fieldwork and surveying.
  • Independently lay out electrical rooms, including clearances.
  • Provide input on design hours for projects and activities.
  • Provide direction to other designers on a project.
  • Perform LEED calculations with minimum supervision.
