Electrical/Avionics Engineering Intern

Astro Mechanica•San Francisco, CA
•$40 - $55•Onsite

About The Position

Astro Mechanica is seeking an intern to join its Electrical Engineering and Avionics Team for Summer 2027. The program begins June 7, 2027, for semester schools and June 27, 2027, for quarter schools. Based in San Francisco, the intern will work in person with the avionics team on real flight and test hardware alongside full-time engineers. The role focuses on designing, building, and improving electrical subsystems for engines and aircraft, bridging hardware and software, and collaborating across disciplines. With mentorship from senior engineers, the intern will help take avionics designs from concept through validation. The work involves developing reliable interfaces with other systems using fault-tolerant design and verifying designs through subsystem and integration testing, following a “test-like-you-fly” philosophy. The intern will own a scoped project during the summer and present results to the team at the end of the internship. The internship is approximately 10–12 weeks.

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Hands-on experience with electrical or avionics systems through a club, project, research, or internship.
  • Experience with wire harnesses, connectors, and soldering or crimping.
  • Familiarity with installing and troubleshooting electronic sensors and components.
  • Competence with electrical test equipment such as multimeters, oscilloscopes, and power supplies.
  • Exposure to schematic-capture or PCB-design tools such as Altium or KiCad.
  • Experience with Python, Bash, or a similar language for scripting and test automation.
  • Familiarity with embedded systems and communication protocols such as CAN, SPI, I2C, UART, or Ethernet.
  • Attention to detail and commitment to a high level of quality.
  • Flexibility to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Availability for a full-time, in-person internship in San Francisco during Summer 2027, approximately 10–12 weeks.

Responsibilities

  • Support the design and build-out of electrical avionics systems, including in-house-designed boards, for flight hardware and ground-test infrastructure such as hardware-in-the-loop test beds.
  • Assist with electrical avionics component selection, analysis, and integration.
  • Design, build, and test wire harnesses and associated subcomponents.
  • Install, configure, and troubleshoot sensors and electronic components.
  • Write scripts and tools, such as Python or Bash, to automate testing, data collection, and hardware bring-up.
  • Support subsystem and integration testing, and analyze data to verify requirements and performance.
  • Work with software, GNC, propulsion, and structures engineers to define and support electrical interfaces.
  • Own a scoped project through the summer and present results to the team at the end of the internship.

Benefits

  • Competitive hourly pay
  • Hands-on mentorship from experienced engineers
  • Company-funded perks, including team lunches, game nights, and other activities
