About The Position

The Educational Interpreter I (Language Interpreter/Translator) assists teachers in fulfilling the goals of the second language program by providing appropriate language instruction and interpretation to students. This role aids in the implementation of educational programs by helping students access academic core content. The position requires proficiency in English and another required language, along with a high school diploma or GED.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or G.E.D.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in two (2) languages, English and the appropriate language.
  • Experience in working with children and parents with special needs, multi-cultural and multi-ethnic backgrounds.
  • Knowledge of or receptive to the philosophy, policy, and methodology of the U.S. educational system.
  • Experience in teaching multi-age groups.

Responsibilities

  • Interpret abstract language meanings.
  • Communicate with the student’s teacher(s) to understand academic needs.
  • Translate class lectures and assignments with proficiency.
  • Assist students in understanding and completing homework.
  • Translate permission slips, report cards, progress reports, and other parent communication documents.
  • Translate and interpret notes from parents.
  • Help enroll new non-English speaking students.
  • Translate between parents and teachers during in-school meetings.
  • Make telephone calls to students' homes to communicate with parents/guardians as requested by staff.
  • Make home visits, accompanied by another school system employee, if no other means of communication is available or in an emergency.
  • Provide appropriate language instruction to students under the supervision of a certified classroom teacher.
  • Assist teachers, parents, and local school personnel in fulfilling instructional goals of the second language program.
  • Provide instruction, counseling, appropriate learning materials, and experiences for participants.
  • Continuously evaluate students’ progress and achievement.
  • Plan and implement parent and child interactions and activities.
  • Maintain accurate records on the program and provide data to appropriate personnel.
  • Plan regularly with staff and participate in appropriate school meetings and activities.
  • Comply with policies, rules, and regulations of the School District and relevant regulatory agencies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director.
