About The Position

This part-time (25-29 hours), year-round, weekend position (Saturday, Sunday, and one or two weekdays) is responsible for conducting a variety of educational programs in the Greensboro Science Center’s Aquarium and Zoo. This position requires a friendly, energetic, and outgoing person with strong teaching, speaking, communication, time management, and interpersonal skills. Prior experience with public presentations is preferred, but not required.

Requirements

  • Minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Prior experience teaching or presenting in a formal or informal setting.
  • Possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Have reliable transportation.
  • Pass a background check.
  • Ability to pass annual TB tests.
  • Required to walk, sit, and stand for extended periods.
  • Ability to work outdoors for various lengths of time under a variety of conditions, including both hot and cold temperatures, high humidity, and exposure to various plants and animals.
  • Safely and comfortably climb stairs, lift, carry, and move up to 30 pounds.
  • Safely and comfortably navigate uneven surfaces, including gravel, grass, hills, and stairs.
  • Safely use small hand tools, gardening equipment, and household chemicals.

Nice To Haves

  • Preferably a B.S. or B.A. in a related field.
  • Prior experience with public presentations is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Enthusiastically teach and present all required programs, including interpretive gallery talks, Aquarium Adventures, Penguin Encounters, Zoo Treks, Science On the Spot (interpretation and educational carts), and other programs according to training and guidelines.
  • Present programs in various settings and engage with groups of varying sizes and ages.
  • Positively interact with children and adults of all ages and abilities in small or large-group settings.
  • Maintain excellent communication with and work with the public as well as with staff members of all ages and positions in all departments.
  • Develop and lead creative and engaging lessons and activities.
  • Utilize and operate appropriate technology such as two-way radios, phones, computers, microphones, copiers, and laminators.
  • Maintain a safe and organized working and learning environment.
  • Maintain education program supplies and materials.
  • Reliably follow a set schedule and agenda and proactively plan daily activities.
  • Complete tasks, follow schedule, and take initiative with minimal to no supervision.
  • Be flexible and adaptable while maintaining a positive outlook.
  • Dress appropriately for the day’s activities and adhere to the GSC dress code.
  • Respond to emergency situations safely and appropriately.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Adhere to all policies and procedures of the Greensboro Science Center.
