About The Position

As a member of the Education Team, the part-time Seasonal Education Instructor will support the facilitation of the Zoo’s education programs through on-ground guest engagement, after-hour and weekend programs, and occasional daytime program support. These programs may include guest engagement in the Fred and Barbara Erb Discovery Trails, Nocturnal Adventures, Overnights, and off-site programs, including afterschool programs and tabling events. All candidates must attend training prior to the start of work. The Detroit Zoo is an equal opportunity employer and we are committed to diversity in our workforce. Requirements

  • Must be 18 years or older
  • Experience working with people of all ages, especially children
  • Familiar with biology, environmental science or animal welfare concepts and a willingness to learn
  • Must learn to use a computer, printer, two-way radio and iPad
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
  • Must be reasonable, diplomatic and use common sense to make sound decisions
  • Must have the ability to think quickly and identify solutions to customer service issues
  • Must be professional and have a cheerful, friendly, social disposition
  • Before hire, one must clear a background check
  • Able to operate various size/styled motor vehicles.
  • Requires valid Michigan Driver’s License.

Nice To Haves

  • Completion of a Bachelor’s degree in Education, General Science, Zoology, Biology or other related field OR completion of a High School Diploma or equivalent with four years of experience in a zoological institution or a youth organization preferred
  • Candidates with regular weekday daytime availability (Monday-Friday 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m.) preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Lead education programs for audiences of all ages as part of the Education team
  • Lead groups on hikes throughout the Zoo using hands-on activities, games, or singing
  • Greet guests and program participants enthusiastically and provide information to enhance their visit
  • Engage guests on-site through interactive interpretation and nature-based play, fostering curiosity, exploration, and meaningful connections to the natural world.
  • Be familiar with all facets of the Zoo to answer questions accurately
  • Contribute to a positive, energetic, and safe experience for program participants, colleagues and guests
  • Facilitate Zoo Overnights and Nocturnal Adventures - remain at the Zoo after hours and the occasional overnight as the responsible party and respond to incidents if needed
  • Facilitate programming at DZS-led community outreach programs with libraries, schools, afterschool providers, community festivals, and other community organizations
  • Set up, break down, and reset materials to support daily programming
  • Must be available for a flexible work schedule and provide at least two weekends a month availability; Shifts may include weekends, weekdays, evenings, nights, and holidays
  • Assist with program setup and breakdown
  • All other responsibilities and tasks as assigned
