About The Position

The Department of Corrections, Division of Institutions, is recruiting for an Education Coordinator for the Anvil Mountain Correctional Center (AMCC) located in Nome, Alaska. The successful applicant will oversee the programs department at Anvil Mountain Correctional Center under the supervision of our PO 3. You will engage in providing innovative educational programs within our facility. You will be working with a culturally diverse offender population and need to recognize and respond to lifestyle and value differences. This encompasses program development and design, coupled with making curriculum for offenders’ education in the areas of Adult Basic Education, General Equivalency Diploma (GED), Life Skills, Vocational Education, and Post-Secondary Education.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college in education, counseling, social or behavior sciences or a closely related field.
  • One year of journey level paraprofessional experience in educational or vocational education programs or services.
  • Uses computer, software applications, databases, and automated systems to accomplish work.
  • Expresses information to individuals or groups effectively, taking into account the audience and nature of the information.
  • Makes clear and convincing oral and written presentations.
  • Listens to others, attends to nonverbal cues, and responds appropriately.
  • Helps others learn through formal or informal methods.
  • Identifies training needs.
  • Provides constructive feedback.
  • Coaches others on how to perform tasks.
  • Acts as a mentor.
  • Is open to change and new information.
  • Adapts behavior or work methods in response to new information, changing conditions, or unexpected obstacles.

  • Ability to bend, lift, climb, stand, and walk for long periods of time.

  • Extensive background investigation will be required.
  • Working with inmates requires care in observing institution security policies and procedures and may involve personal risk.
  • Some positions perform activities that require bending, crouching, walking or standing for long periods of time.
  • Some work activities involve discomfort or unpleasantness such as moderate noise levels, vibration, dust, dirt or odors associated with operation of equipment and/or tools in performance of duties.
  • Must be able to use the Alaska Public Safety Information Network (APSIN)/Alaska Corrections Offender Management System (ACOMS).
  • Must pass a criminal history check.
  • Must be fingerprinted.
