About The Position

University of Pittsburgh Physicians is hiring a full-time Echocardiographer for the Heart and Vascular Institute at Magee Women’s Hospital. The role performs cardiac ultrasound imaging procedures with a degree of independence, using judgment and technical skill to obtain diagnostic images and recognize critical pathologies. The position takes call on weeknights, weekends, and holidays on a rotating schedule. The Echocardiographer performs procedures according to Medical Director guidelines, department protocols, and industry standards. Procedures include transthoracic, transesophageal, and stress echocardiography, as well as echo with contrast. The position also involves patient identification and preparation, reviewing and documenting patient history, operating ultrasound equipment, entering exam charges, coding and processing completed exams, and assisting physicians with invasive procedures when needed. The successful candidate communicates clearly and compassionately with patients, collaborates with coworkers and other departments to support efficient patient care, and follows system-wide and departmental policies and values. The role requires the ability to work independently within a reasonable timeframe, cover off shifts and on-call responsibilities, and provide services at satellite facilities where applicable.

Requirements

Completion of formal training in an accredited ultrasound program or professional equivalent.
Completion of formal training in an ultrasound program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP).
Must obtain RDCS or RDMS within 12 months of hire.
Basic Life Support (BLS) or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).
Act 34 clearance.

RDCS, RCS, or RDMS registered or registry eligible.
Completion of the Physics portion of the registry.

Responsibilities

Communicate instructions and explain procedures to patients clearly and concisely to address concerns and encourage cooperation.
Properly identify patients, review patient history and physician orders, apply departmental protocols, and document patient history in the electronic record as required.
Use appropriate ultrasound instrumentation and demonstrate knowledge of equipment operations, applications, and scanning techniques to optimize image data and documentation.
Interact respectfully and compassionately with patients and coworkers, and collaborate with other departments to support efficient patient care.
Ensure completed exams are properly coded and identified for electronic processing and storage, and enter charges for performed exams.
Perform cardiac ultrasound procedures according to Medical Director guidelines, established time frames, and protocols, including transthoracic, transesophageal, and stress echocardiography and echo with contrast.
Follow system-wide and departmental values, policies, and procedures.
Develop the ability to function independently and cover off shifts, on-call responsibilities, and satellite facilities where applicable, while communicating with the lead and management team.
Assist physicians with invasive procedures as necessary and adhere to universal protocol standards.
Obtain echocardiographic images according to department policy and industry standards, including M-Mode, 2D, Doppler, Color Flow Doppler, transesophageal echo, echo enhancement, bubble and contrast studies, and stress echocardiography.
