About The Position

This is a non-exempt position. Short Notice position is an on-call role, and applicants must be prepared to report to work within one hour of receiving notification. Incumbent assists one or more early childhood teachers in the education, care, supervision, and instruction or pre-school aged children, in classrooms, common areas, and playgrounds at a center dedicated to pre-kindergarten children, and in the community.

Requirements

• Completion of a GED/High School diploma within 6 months of hire.
• Completion of CDA or equivalent in early childhood education within two (2) years of hire with emphasis on pre-school age children.
• Pediatric First Aid/CPR certification.
• Health Clearance.
• TB Test.
• Obtaining a food handlers card within 3 weeks of hire.
• Basic knowledge of the principles and practices of age appropriate early child development applicable for an educational setting.
• Basic knowledge of instruction methods for preschool-aged children.
• Knowledge of basic clerical and record keeping processes.
• Basic knowledge of and skill at using personal computers, games, and other equipment to support play, learning, record information, and send communications.
• Sufficient human relation skills to work productively and cooperatively with teachers, students, and parents in informal settings.
• Patience when conveying information.
• Demonstrates sensitivity to the needs of students.
• Ability to learn to assess the needs of individual students.
• Ability to perform work indoors and outdoors in a classroom or playground environment engaged in work of a moderately active nature.
• Normal hearing and speaking skills to communicate with staff and students.
• Near visual acuity to read and write printed materials and observe the activities of children.
• Sufficient ambulatory ability to move about classroom, common area, and playgrounds, assist with presentations, and reach classroom materials.
• Ability to stand, walk, and sit upright on a floor-level surface for extended periods of time (greater than 1 hour).
• Ability to lift, push, and pull light to medium objects on an occasional basis (10-50 lbs).
• Personal appearance, grooming, attitudes, and language patterns that provide a suitable example to children.
• Possession and maintenance of a valid Washington State driver’s license and eligibility for the Tribes’ Vehicle Insurance (if required).

Responsibilities

• Assists one or more early childhood teachers in the education, care, supervision, and instruction of pre-school aged children.

• Conducts informal reading and project circles with individual and small groups of children.
• Assists others with demonstrations of assigned subject matter.
• Relates positively to students in a learning environment in a way that builds confidence and recognizes socioeconomic and cultural differences among children.
• Balances children’s physical needs, emotional support, and deals with common behavior problems.
• Assists children on and off of a bus safely.
