About The Position

Performs semi-skilled work operating a school bus to transport students to and from school, activities, or events, and performs related work as assigned. The work is performed under the moderate supervision of the Transportation Planner.

The position requires safe operation and inspection of a school bus, attention to passenger safety and discipline, and completion of related records and reports. The driver also cleans the bus and conducts periodic emergency evacuation drills. Applicable training will be provided.

Requirements

• At least 1 year of driving experience as a licensed motor vehicle operator, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Must be at least 18 years of age.
• Valid North Carolina commercial driver's license with Passenger and School Bus endorsements.
• Register in the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Clearinghouse.
• Pass the pre-employment DOT drug test.
• Pass the pre-employment criminal and DMV checks.
• Meet the Physical Standards Test and all legal requirements of the NC DMV and Cabarrus County Schools.
• Have a clear criminal background check and safe driving record.
• Have a health certificate.
• Depending on the school or site, hold or be eligible for a North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services Child Care Criminal Background Check and approval letter.
• Ability to read and write.
• General knowledge of school bus operation and District geography, including street locations; skill in safe school bus operation.
• Ability to detect school bus equipment malfunctions.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school officials, associates, students, parents, and the general public.

Nice To Haves

• High school diploma or GED is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Perform pre-trip and post-trip school bus inspections and report operating or equipment deficiencies.
• Transport students to and from school, activities, and events.
• Clean the bus inside and out, including washing as needed, sweeping, and emptying trash.
• Obey traffic laws and observe safety regulations for school bus operations.
• Ensure passenger safety, maintain discipline on the bus, and complete disciplinary forms as needed.
• Conduct periodic emergency evacuation drills.
• Record mileage and maintain records and reports.
• Perform related work as required.
