About The Position
This externship program is designed for DVM students to gain practical experience in a contemporary small animal practice as part of their veterinary curriculum. The program aims to enhance practice-readiness and prepare students for post-graduation care delivery. Externs will practice problem-solving, technical, and communication skills under veterinary supervision, participating in all aspects of patient care. The program provides instruction, mentoring, and evaluation, with a written performance evaluation provided at the end.
Requirements
- Be enrolled in an accredited DVM program.
- Authorized to work in the United States.
- Must carry professional liability insurance (e.g., AVMA PLIT).
- Coverage must be current and a certificate of coverage submitted with the application.
Nice To Haves
- Review the Veterinary Practice Act regarding the scope of duties and required supervision.
- Familiarity with the type and degree of veterinary supervision that is required.
Responsibilities
- Gather histories
- Perform physical examinations
- Develop diagnostic and therapeutic plans
- Scrub in to surgery
- Assist in the management of medical cases
- Provide wellness care
- Develop client communication skills
- Polish technical skills
- Produce appropriate medical records (SOAPs) within the time limits of daily practice
Benefits
- A stipend of $250 per week will be provided.
