About The Position

This program is designed to provide veterinary students with practical, hands-on experience in a contemporary, well-run small animal practice. It serves as a valuable component of their veterinary education, preparing them for practice after graduation by focusing on practice-readiness. Externs will practice problem-solving, technical, and communication skills under veterinary supervision, participating in all aspects of patient care. The program aims to contribute to the student's development and help them transition smoothly into their post-graduation careers.

Requirements

  • Be enrolled in an accredited DVM program.
  • Be authorized to work in the United States.
  • Carry professional liability insurance (e.g., AVMA PLIT).
  • Submit a certificate of coverage with your application.

Nice To Haves

  • Review the Veterinary Practice Act regarding the scope of duties and required supervision.
  • Be familiar with the type and degree of veterinary supervision that is required.

Responsibilities

  • Gather histories
  • Perform physical examinations
  • Develop diagnostic and therapeutic plans
  • Scrub in to surgery
  • Assist in the management of medical cases
  • Provide wellness care
  • Develop client communication skills
  • Polish technical skills
  • Produce appropriate medical records (SOAPs) within the time limits of daily practice

Benefits

  • A stipend of $250 per week will be provided.
