About The Position

The Imaging IT Infrastructure team supports a highly complex and interconnected Imaging environment, critical to the UCSF Medical Center and the UCSF School of Medicine. Within the Imaging IT group, we promote growth and development of skills to meet the ever-changing needs of the Department and the Enterprise. The DSS Supervisor and Senior Solutions Architect serves as a senior technical and operational leader within the Imaging IT Infrastructure team, reporting to the Director of Infrastructure. The position is responsible for the planning, architecture, implementation, and ongoing operational oversight of complex infrastructure systems supporting enterprise imaging services across multiple clinical departments and affiliated sites within UCSF Health. This role provides direct managerial oversight of infrastructure and Diagnostic Station Services (DSS) staff and spends the majority of time achieving organizational objectives through the coordinated work of subordinate personnel. The incumbent is accountable for team performance and service delivery, including establishing operational goals and technical standards; managing workflow and priorities; coaching and conducting performance management activities; determining appropriate technologies and processes; overseeing budget and lifecycle planning; and ensuring compliance with institutional, regulatory, and security requirements. The position oversees the lifecycle management, deployment, maintenance, and operational functionality of approximately 300 Radiologist Diagnostic Stations (DS) and Home Diagnostic Stations (HDS) across UCSF campuses and affiliated clinical locations. These systems support diagnostic image interpretation, dictation, and other mission-critical clinical imaging workflows. In addition, the incumbent leads the design and support of enterprise infrastructure solutions, including storage, virtualization, network, and advanced imaging platforms such as PACS, Vendor Neutral Archive (VNA), and Enterprise Image Viewer systems. The role performs and directs complex operational duties, serves as a senior escalation point for critical technical issues, documents standards and procedures, and trains technical staff on system administration and support practices. Occasional off-hours work is required to support maintenance activities and ensure continuity of critical clinical systems. The UCSF Enterprise Imaging IT team architects, implements, and manages the imaging applications, desktop hardware, computer systems and networks needed to support more than 1M imaging studies annually. The Enterprise Imaging IT team manages a complex application portfolio and end user support which include clinical workstation management. Enterprise Imaging IT portfolio supports 50+ imaging applications and over 280 clinical diagnostic workstations. The team collaborates with cross functional departments daily to deploy various imaging projects and workflows. The department provides Monday - Friday 8am to 5pm support including evening and weekend call to support the Medical Center needs.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in a related area, and 5 – 10 years of related work experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience/training.
• Advanced knowledge of diagnostic workstation (DS/HDS) environments supporting clinical imaging workflows, including system design, engineering, deployment, lifecycle management, and operational support models.
• Demonstrated experience overseeing and managing large-scale diagnostic workstation environments, including standardization, configuration management, performance optimization, and integration with clinical imaging applications.
• Advanced knowledge of clinical imaging workflows and dependencies, including image interpretation, dictation systems, and the impact of workstation performance on clinical operations.
• Demonstrated experience supervising technical staff, including assigning work, setting priorities, and conducting performance management activities.
• Demonstrated ability to manage operational workflows and service delivery through subordinate staff in a complex systems and infrastructure environment.
• Advanced knowledge of imaging infrastructure and associated workflows, including image acquisition, data movement, storage, and access across distributed systems.
• Demonstrated experience supporting and optimizing systems involved in image data movement, including throughput, latency, and reliability considerations.
• Advanced knowledge of system performance monitoring and tuning across workstation, storage, network, and compute platforms, including analysis and remediation of performance bottlenecks impacting imaging workflows.
• Advanced knowledge of infrastructure design, implementation, and administration, including storage, compute, virtualization, and network systems.
• Advanced knowledge of system problem identification, troubleshooting, and resolution in complex, integrated environments.
• Advanced knowledge of information security practices and policies related to infrastructure and clinical systems.
• Demonstrated ability to develop, document, and implement operational procedures and to train technical staff on system administration and support practices.
• Ability to communicate technical concepts effectively to both technical and non-technical audiences.
• Demonstrated analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills with the ability to work independently and collaboratively.

Nice To Haves

• 5+ Years of experience in a Medical Imaging or Enterprise IT setting
• Knowledge of enterprise imaging platforms such as PACS, Vendor Neutral Archive (VNA), and Enterprise Image Viewer systems.
• Experience supporting infrastructure in a healthcare or academic medical center environment with regulatory and clinical workflow considerations.
• Experience with performance tuning and capacity planning for large-scale storage environments (e.g., NAS/SAN) supporting imaging workloads.
• Experience leading engineering and operational strategy for large-scale diagnostic workstation fleets, including hardware standards, OS/application image management, and clinical software integration.
• Experience with monitoring and observability tools used for workstation and infrastructure performance analysis.
• Demonstrated project management experience leading cross-functional technical initiatives.
• Experience with vendor management and infrastructure lifecycle planning.

Responsibilities

• Directly supervises Infrastructure and Diagnostic Station Services (DSS) staff. Provides guidance and direction according to established policies and priorities; manages workflow and daily operations; conducts performance management activities; and ensures objectives associated with timelines and deliverables are achieved.
• Oversees the lifecycle management, deployment, maintenance, and operational functionality of approximately 300 Radiologist Diagnostic Stations (DS) and Home Diagnostic Stations (HDS) across UCSF campuses and affiliated sites. Establishes service standards and ensures support of diagnostic interpretation and dictation workflows.
• Participates in developing operational and budget processes, including staff FTE, hardware lifecycle planning, and vendor coordination. Develops and monitors policies and procedures for infrastructure and DSS operations.
• Responsible for hiring of new employees, salary actions, performance ratings, and other personnel actions. Assumes accountability for decisions made by subordinate staff and ensures compliance with institutional, regulatory, and security policies.
• Researches, proposes, defines, designs, and implements new technologies to meet departmental and enterprise imaging needs. Performs cost/benefit analyses and coordinates with outside IT groups.
• Manages and leads staff in the design and support of infrastructure systems including monitoring platforms, storage (NAS/SAN), network systems, virtualization environments, and related configuration management systems. Serves as a senior escalation point for complex technical issues.
• Responds to complex and critical clinical and departmental infrastructure-related issues. Advises staff in the support of storage, network, virtual environments, imaging platforms (PACS, VNA, Enterprise Image Viewer), and other infrastructure services impacting clinical workflows.
• Oversees the documentation and maintenance of operational procedures for implemented solutions. Trains infrastructure and DSS staff on operations, maintenance, system administration, and support standards.
• Supervises staff in completion of projects of moderate scope in accordance with established practices and procedures. Coordinates cross-functional efforts with stakeholders and Imaging IT leadership.
