Driving Instructor in Training-IL
About The Position
Coastline Academy is hiring a Driving Instructor in Training to teach students practical driving skills and help them become safe, confident drivers. Instructors teach from the passenger seat of a company-provided Coastline vehicle equipped with a second instructor brake and inspected by certified mechanics. Lessons are recorded with dashcams capturing video and audio inside and outside the vehicle. The company provides paid training and supports instructors through state driving-instructor licensing requirements and coursework. Instructors do not conduct lessons alone until they are ready. Student demand is concentrated in afternoons and weekends, and a typical day consists of three two-hour lessons. Training totals 48 hours: 20 hours of in-person learning through modules and readings; 20 hours of hands-on driving and practical mentorship, including shadowing ten one-hour live lessons and completing two five-hour coaching sessions with a Certified Trainer; and eight hours observing a complete student classroom session.
Requirements
- A genuine passion for helping people learn.
- Patience and the ability to remain calm and steady while someone learns a challenging skill.
- A strong safety mindset and sound judgment under pressure.
- Clear, direct communication and a coaching instinct.
- The ability to stay present for hours at a time.
- A valid driver’s license in the state where the applicant wants to work.
- At least five years of licensed driving experience.
- A high school diploma or GED equivalent.
- Ability to pass a background check, drug screen, and reference check.
Responsibilities
- Teach practical driving skills, from parking lots to freeway merges.
- Coach students on the rules of the road.
- Build students’ confidence as well as competence.
- Take control of the vehicle when necessary.
- Document and report each student’s progress.
- Communicate promptly and closely with the supervisor and support team.
- Maintain professionalism in interactions with students and teammates.
- Attend team meetings, updates, and ongoing development.
