About The Position

This is a full-time, onsite position with the Department of Public Safety - Driver Licensing, located at the Yankton Exam Station. The role involves substantial contact with the public, often under stressful conditions, requiring professional and courteous interaction. The position also requires working with a diverse group of people and situations and handling sensitive materials. The hours are typically 4 ten-hour days, Tuesday through Friday, totaling 40 hours a week. This job may require travel away from home, potentially for up to 4 days a week depending on departmental needs.

Requirements

  • A valid driver's license is required.
  • Ability to read and understand complex information and explain it in common terms.
  • Ability to communicate information clearly and concisely.
  • Ability to communicate information relating to state laws, policies, and procedures.
  • Ability to deal tactfully and courteously with the public.
  • Ability to administer examinations.
  • Ability to establish applicant identity and eligibility for ID card, permit, or driver license.
  • Ability to issue ID cards and licenses to qualified citizens.
  • Ability to multi-task diverse and complex activities.
  • Ability to maintain train of thought despite frequent interruptions.
  • Ability to lift and carry approximately 50 lbs. in and out of vehicles and up and down stairs.
  • Ability to objectively grade an applicant's driving ability.
  • Ability to conduct assigned duties in a uniform and standardized manner.
  • Ability to operate computers, cameras, printers, and license processing equipment.
  • Applicants will be required to answer a series of job related questions when submitting an application.
  • Successful applicant(s) will be required to undergo a background investigation.
  • All persons hired will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the United States and complete an Employment Eligibility Verification, Form I-9.
  • The State of South Dakota as an employer will be using E-Verify to complete employment eligibility verification upon hire.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of South Dakota driver's manual requirements pertaining to the safe operation of motor vehicles.

Responsibilities

  • Process license and identification card applications.
  • Compute and accept license and identification card fees.
  • Issue receipts and maintain records of transactions.
  • Administer eye exams, written exams, and drive/skills tests to ensure qualified residents are issued a license.
  • Enter and exit vehicles during drive/skills tests.
  • Direct applicants through road test routes and evaluate their driving performance.
  • Inform applicants of their test performance and any necessary restrictions on licenses.
  • Provide assistance and information to the public and other agencies via direct contact, telephone, and mail.
  • Fill in and verify data on license and identification card application forms.
  • Enter information.
  • Compile and tabulate data.
  • Verify accuracy of computations and entries.
  • Count and balance cash, credit card, and check payments against program totals, correcting errors.
  • Potentially travel to other exam station locations and be away from home 1 or more days in a week.
