About The Position

This is a full-time position with the Department of Public Safety. The hours for this position will be 40 hours a week (5 eight-hour days), Monday - Friday. This job involves travel away from home and over nights. A valid driver license is required. As a Driver License Examiner, you will have substantial contact with the public, under potentially stressful conditions. You are expected to treat the public in a professional and courteous manner at all times. The job also requires you to work with a diverse group of people and situations. You will also handle very sensitive materials.

Requirements

  • A valid driver license is required.
  • Knowledge of South Dakota driver's manual requirements pertaining to the safe operation of motor vehicles.
  • Knowledge of motor vehicle operation.
  • Proficiency with computers.
  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle.
  • Ability to read and understand complex information and explain that information in common terms.
  • Ability to communicate information clearly and concisely.
  • Ability to communicate information relating to state laws, policies, and procedures.
  • Ability to deal tactfully and courteously with the public.
  • Ability to administer examinations.
  • Ability to establish applicants identity and eligibility for ID card, permit, or driver license.
  • Ability to issue ID cards and licenses to qualified citizens.
  • Ability to multi-task diverse and complex activities.
  • Ability to maintain train of thought despite frequent interruptions.
  • Ability to lift and carry 60 pounds or more in and out of vehicles and up and down stairs on and off counters.
  • Ability to objectively grade an applicant's driving ability.
  • Ability to conduct assigned duties in a uniform and standardized manner.
  • Ability to operate computers, cameras, printers, and license processing equipment.
  • Ability to travel at and be away from home 1 to 4 days in a week - overnights included.

  • All persons hired will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the United States and complete an Employment Eligibility Verification, Form I-9.

Responsibilities

  • Administer eye examinations, knowledge (rules of the road) exams, and skills/ behind the wheel test to ensure that only qualified residents of South Dakota are issued a license to drive on the nation's highways.
  • During the skills/behind the wheel tests you must be able to enter and exit the vehicles used in testing and will be required to direct applicants through the skills test route and evaluate their driving performance during the exam.
  • At the conclusion of the skills/behind the wheel exam you will be required critique the applicants performance and inform them if it is satisfactory or not.
  • Place the appropriate restrictions on the driver license as needed.
  • Process license and identification card applications.
  • Compute and accept license and identification card fees.
  • Issue receipts and maintain records of all transactions.
  • Provide assistance and information to the public and other agencies through direct, telephone, and mail contact.
  • Fill in and verify data on license or identification card application forms.
  • Enter information.
  • Compile and tabulate data.
  • Verify accuracy of computer entries.
  • Count and balance cash, credit cards, and check payments.
  • Run payment against program total, correct errors.
  • Traveling may be required, during which you may be required to lift equipment that weighs between 60-70 lbs.
