About The Position

Join the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation’s (PennDOT) Bureau of Driver Licensing as a Driver License Examiner for Commercial Driver License (CDL) candidates. This role offers dependable daytime hours, a consistent workweek, and the chance to stay close to home. You will play an important part in public safety by evaluating new CDL drivers and ensuring they meet Pennsylvania licensing requirements and standards. This position evaluates driver skills, reviews identity documents, and supports customer transactions to ensure safe and lawful licensing practices.

Requirements

  • One year of experience as a Driver License Examiner Assistant (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration)
  • Two years of experience obtaining, evaluating, and providing information to the public
  • Active Pennsylvania non-commercial Class C Driver’s License or equivalent
  • Twenty-one years of age at the time of application
  • No suspensions or revocations of a driver’s license during the five year period immediately preceding employment
  • Possession of an active Class A Pennsylvania Commercial Driver's License or equivalent with P and N endorsements
  • Commercial Driver License cannot have any of the following restrictions: E, L, N, O, or Z
  • Meet the PA residency requirement
  • Able to perform essential job functions
  • Submission of criminal history reports (conditional offer of employment)
  • Undergo and pass a Fingerprint and Name-Based Criminal History Check prior to employment

Nice To Haves

  • Active unrestricted Class M driver’s license (required within six months of employment or before end of probationary period for hires after February 28, 2022)

Responsibilities

  • Assess physical qualifications, driving skills, and vehicle conditions during examinations
  • Administer written tests to confirm that applicants understand traffic laws and road signs
  • Conduct pre-trip, skills, and driving tests for commercial and non-commercial applicants
  • Examine identity documents to confirm authenticity and prevent fraud
  • Issue licenses and identification cards while providing accurate program information
  • Follow REAL ID, fee waiver, and customer service policies during all licensing activities
