About The Position

Machinify is hiring a SQL Server expert for its Data Mining Group (DMG), which analyzes medical and pharmacy claims to identify overpayments, billing errors, and other recovery opportunities. The role owns the performance and health of the data platform supporting DMG and uses database performance improvements to expand data-mining capabilities and help health plans recover funds and reduce healthcare costs. The analyst tunes complex T-SQL across multi-terabyte claims datasets, designs and maintains indexing, partitioning, and statistics strategies, and monitors database performance and reliability. The role also develops stored procedures, views, and data structures; analyzes claims trends; investigates slowdowns and data anomalies to resolve root causes; and improves team processes through automation. The position may be hired at different levels. It is remote within the United States.

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of hands-on experience as a SQL Server DBA, database engineer, or performance-focused database developer.
  • Expert-level T-SQL and a demonstrated ability to optimize queries by analyzing execution plans and resolving bottlenecks.
  • Deep knowledge of SQL Server internals, including indexing, statistics, partitioning, Query Store, DMVs, wait statistics, and Extended Events.
  • A root-cause-oriented approach and ability to demonstrate how resolving underlying problems saved time or money.
  • Experience with large-scale data, such as multi-terabyte databases, billion-row tables, or enterprise data warehouses.
  • Knowledge of database administration fundamentals, including backup and recovery, high availability (Always On Availability Groups), security, and monitoring.
  • Proactive problem-solving skills, ability to manage multiple priorities, and ability to explain technical tradeoffs to non-technical partners.
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information systems, or a related field, or equivalent experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with medical and pharmacy claims or healthcare payment integrity.
  • Experience with Azure SQL Database, Azure SQL Managed Instance, or cloud database migrations.
  • Automation experience with PowerShell or Python.
  • Data warehouse design and columnstore indexing.

Responsibilities

  • Tune complex T-SQL queries against large claims datasets using execution plans, Query Store, wait statistics, DMVs, and Extended Events, and measure performance improvements.
  • Design and maintain indexing, partitioning, and statistics strategies to reduce query runtimes and resource use.
  • Monitor database performance; resolve blocking and deadlocks; tune tempdb and memory; and partner with infrastructure on capacity planning, backups, and high availability.
  • Develop stored procedures, views, and data structures that support data-mining work, making appropriate normalization and denormalization decisions.
  • Write, run, and monitor SQL to examine, interpret, and visualize medical and pharmacy claims trends and identify overpayments and recovery opportunities.
  • Investigate slowdowns, data anomalies, and changes in findings to identify and resolve root causes.
  • Improve data-mining and enrichment processes by building tools and automation.
  • Own small projects end to end, review SQL, coach analysts on efficient query writing, and work with other departments to align data insights with business goals.
