This position functions as a lead Probation and Parole Officer responsible for training and supervising new Probation and Parole Officers (PPOs) within Judicial District 20. The role ensures consistency among new officers and upholds the high standards of the Department of Adult Correction and Community Supervision. The Field Training Officer provides training in case management techniques, offender counseling using various sanctions (e.g., split-sentence, electronic house arrest, drug treatment), and familiarizes new officers with software platforms and other supervision tools. The position also serves as a local training resource for new technology and training components. New PPOs will be trained to conduct in-depth risk and needs assessments to provide recommendations to the court regarding offender supervision, treatment, and sanctions. The role ensures new PPOs are equipped with and know how to use assigned equipment, including communication devices and safety packages. Work assignments involve educating new PPOs on offender counseling and supervision, effective case management, and judiciary practices and procedures, requiring significant judgment and independence. Employees work primarily with new hires in the field, but also in office, court, and institutional settings. The position involves demonstrating and training safe and effective offender contacts at residences and/or workplaces, including warrantless searches in potentially hostile or unsanitary environments. Objective observational reports are provided to the PPO's work unit supervisor and district management. The role frequently involves exposure to high crime, violence-prone areas with potential threats from offenders, their family members, and associates. The position models safe and effective behavior, emphasizing adherence to standards and policy in potentially hostile situations. Violent interactions may result in bodily injury, and under certain circumstances, employees may be required to restrain or use deadly force. Work requires flexible hours, including day, night, weekend emergency response, and on-call availability. The position will serve on the Electronic House Arrest Response Team (EHART) and the Emergency Response Team, and may be required to carry a caseload due to operational needs. The District Field Training Officer reports to the Judicial District Manager.
