About The Position

Xcel Energy is hiring a Distribution Designer at the I, II, Senior, or Principal level in Edina. This mastery-level design position provides project management for distribution design work serving new and existing commercial, industrial, residential, and internal customers, including complex designs. The role is the primary contact for future and existing customers and develops cost-effective designs that balance customer needs with Xcel Energy standards and administrative guidelines. The designer may clarify work and provide direction to construction personnel, serve as a liaison between construction and customers, and help mentor and train other designers. Travel and overnight stays may be required, and emergency assistance outside normal business hours may be expected. The position manages projects from initial customer contact through post-project analysis, including construction work plans, customer schedules and design requirements, and financial and budgetary requirements. It represents the company to government officials, contractors, city agencies, vendors, architects, and engineers; obtains permits and easements; and executes contracts and agreements in accordance with administrative instructions and regulatory requirements. The role may be filled at one of four levels. All levels require an associate degree in a relevant field or equivalent education and experience. Higher levels require progressively greater design experience and proficiency or expertise in design-related systems, design disciplines, construction standards, and technical codes. Xcel Energy supports a hybrid work model; many roles are expected to work onsite three days per week, Tuesday through Thursday, though expectations vary by role, team, and business needs.
