About The Position

The Director of Liturgy is an integral member of the parish staff, responsible for facilitating and coordinating liturgical activities under the guidance of the Pastor. This role requires a deep understanding of Catholic liturgy and a passion for serving the community. The liturgy director’s primary responsibility is the smooth flow of the liturgical ministry of the parish. The director works with the other parish pastoral staff, including the Director of Music to determine policies relating to the liturgical celebrations of the parish, and to plan the seasonal liturgical celebrations.

Requirements

  • Must be a practicing Catholic and active in a parish
  • Possess the ability to honor and maintain confidentiality
  • Must work well with people of all walks of life
  • Possess the ability to lead and train liturgical ministers
  • High School Diploma or equivalent is required
  • Minimum of 1-2 years’ experience in Liturgical Ministry
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point and Publisher.
  • Knowledge of liturgy preferred.
  • Skills/knowledge in selecting appropriate liturgical music
  • Must have demonstrated organizational skills, attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Must be able to handle multiple tasks and to work with volunteers
  • Ability to read, analyze, and write reports, business correspondence and procedure manuals.
  • Strong communication skills; ability to effectively present information and respond to questions.
  • Must have good verbal and written communication skills in English and Spanish).
  • Ability to solve practical problems and ability to interpret instructions furnished in writing or orally.
  • Ability to adapt to changing schedules or routines; excellent time management skills.
  • Driver’s License.

Responsibilities

  • Recruit and schedule all liturgical ministers, including the readers, commentators, extraordinary ministers of the Eucharist, ushers, sacristans, flower/plant care volunteers, church and sacristy care, maintain holy water vessels, linen laundry and baptism gowns
  • Provide training for all new ministers and ongoing training for established ministers
  • Coordinate the cleaning of liturgical vestments
  • Work closely with the pastor to understand the parish liturgical policy and to assist in the liturgy planning process and seasonal church environment
  • Assure mass intention lists prepared by office staff are available in the church and placed on the altar for the presider
  • Work with office staff to prepare weekly intercessions and announcements
  • Attend the weekend masses, holy day masses and Christmas and Easter masses to assure everything runs smoothly
  • Supervise the offertory and second collections process at all Masses to assure the collections are performed as scheduled and are secured in the safe. Prepare and monitor the numbered sealed bags and log for these collections to assure proper procedures are followed to provide security for the monies
  • Coordinate rites and liturgical services in conjunction with the OCIA team
  • Prepare liturgies for special liturgical events
  • Coordinate liturgy and meet with priest and families to help plan for baptisms and the liturgy, funerals/bereavements, weddings and quinceaneras, providing information and answering any questions
  • Maintain and submit orders for all liturgical supplies (hosts, wine, candles) and equipment.
  • Obtain and prepare all required documents for marriages (wedding packets) and have the appropriate documents (i.e., marriage license) available at the wedding liturgy for signature by witnesses. Provide the license to parish office staff to submit to the proper governmental authority for official filing of the marriage.
  • Coordinate and conduct wedding and quinceanera rehearsals as needed.
  • Set up altar for weddings and quinceaneras/baptisms and assist wedding/quinceanera participants with any last minute details
  • Clear the altar after funerals, weddings & quinceaneras
  • Coordinate Penance Services during Advent and Lenten seasons as well as Healing Mass by contacting and scheduling additional priests
  • Contact visiting priests for masses and for reconciliation, as needed
  • If a marriage is to be held in another country (i.e., Mexico), prepare a letter and ensure payment of the required fee for the processing of the documents is paid and sent to the designated Archdiocese staff
  • Assist parish secretary as needed to answer phone calls when needed
  • Prepare a list of the deceased for All Soul’s Day
  • Coordinate with Director or Coordinator of Religious Education (DRE or CRE) for regular confirmations and any special liturgy
