About The Position

This is a full-time, 10-month contract, faculty position overseeing the Lipscomb University Center for Speaking and Writing (CSW). The role involves strategic planning, daily supervision, serving on the Executive Committee of the Learning Commons, and assisting with curricular design. The Director will also carry a 17-hour teaching load, including the CSW Practicum course for consultants. The CSW aims to help clients polish their written and spoken work in a welcoming environment, serving all undergraduate and graduate students through synchronous in-person and online consultations.

Requirements

  • M.A. in English, Rhetoric/Composition, Linguistics, or a related field required
  • At least one year of writing center experience required
  • Experience teaching composition at the collegiate level required
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Strict confidentiality

  • Experienced thought partner and collaborator
  • Collaborative problem solver

Nice To Haves

  • Ph.D. strongly preferred
  • Experience in writing or speaking center administration preferred
  • Experience with developmental writers preferred
  • Research interests in multilingual writers, online tutoring, new media studies, or multiliteracies are especially encouraged to apply

Responsibilities

  • Designing the pedagogical structure of the CSW
  • Overseeing daily operations of the CSW
  • Supervising and mentoring writing consultants
  • Serving as a vital part of the Learning Commons
  • Designing and conducting writing workshops for University courses and organizations
  • Coordinating with other University offices and departments
  • Planning CSW outreach events for the University and/or community
  • Updating scheduling software, the Writing Studio website, and social media
  • Managing the CSW budget
  • Staying current on Writing and Speaking Center theory and pedagogy
  • Providing pedagogical oversight and logistical support for the CSW
  • Developing an assessment and strategic growth plan for the CSW
  • Developing and organizing outreach activities for the CSW across the University
  • Recruiting and hiring undergraduate and graduate writing and speaking consultants
  • Providing training, ongoing professional development, supervision, and evaluation for writing consultants
  • Designing writing resources for the CSW website, including videos and infographics
  • Designing and delivering writing or presenting workshops across the University
  • Designing writing diagnostic materials for University departments
  • Developing individualized tutoring plans for students with long-term support needs
  • Serving on the Learning Commons leadership team
