About The Position

The Lipscomb University Center for Speaking and Writing (CSW) is looking to hire peer writing and speaking consultants. The goal of the new speaking center, as part of the CSW, is to assist students, faculty, and staff at Lipscomb University with public speeches and presentations at all levels. Speaking consultants will offer feedback to assist with strengthening the client’s delivery, message, and overall confidence through advice and encouragement given throughout the session. Consultants will work in the center 3-10 hours per week performing tasks such as tutoring university students one-on-one, teaching workshops (including class visits), and attending mandatory staff meetings. Students will also be required to attend staff development before each semester begins.

Requirements

  • Must be a current Lipscomb University student
  • Federal work study eligible
  • Have passed the POWERS sequence, EN1223 or CO 1223 with a ‘B’ or better
  • Have strong communication skills
  • Enjoy working with others
  • Maintain professionalism with peers

Responsibilities

  • Assist with topic selection
  • Assist with audience analysis / adaptation
  • Assist with content development
  • Assist with preparation outlines, delivery outlines and speaking notes
  • Assist with persuasive presentations
  • Assist with informative presentations
  • Assist with group presentations
  • Assist with visual delivery (eye contact, posture, gestures, use of notes)
  • Assist with audio delivery (volume, enunciation, pace, inflection)
  • Assist with audio-visual aids
  • Assist with managing speaking anxiety
  • Tutoring university students one-on-one
  • Teaching workshops (including class visits)
  • Attending mandatory staff meetings
  • Attending staff development before each semester begins
