About The Position

Handspring is a virtual mental health clinic for children, young adults, and families, seeking a Director of Strategic Initiatives to work directly with founders as a force multiplier. The company has recently closed a $19M Series B and is experiencing growing payer demand. The next few years will involve launching in new states, developing new care models, expanding payer partnerships, and building technology. This is a high-trust operating role at the company's core, responsible for analyses driving major decisions and leading cross-functional initiatives lacking a clear owner. The role requires hands-on work, including administrative tasks, and offers a close view of healthcare company building with significant influence. The ideal candidate will think like an owner, bring order to ambiguity, and ensure tasks are completed. This position is expected to be a stepping stone to functional leadership within 2-3 years, with company investment in that growth.

Requirements

  • 5 to 7 years of experience, with at least 2 years at a top management consulting firm (or investment banking/private equity).
  • Demonstrated ability to learn quickly, structure ambiguous problems, and operate effectively with senior executives.
  • Exceptional written and analytical communication skills, with the ability to translate discussions into decision-ready documents.
  • Proven track record of closing tasks and excellent follow-through.
  • High level of trustworthiness and discretion, capable of handling sensitive information.
  • Comfort with a constantly changing portfolio of responsibilities and the ability to structure problems independently.
  • Passion for company-building and the healthcare industry.
  • Based in the New York City area with the ability to work from the NYC office regularly.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience as a founder or early startup operator, particularly in healthcare.

Responsibilities

  • Lead initiatives that currently lack an owner and transition experiments into operational processes.
  • Conduct analyses for major company decisions, including pricing, staffing, expansion, and investment, by building models for unit economics, workforce capacity, market entry, and payer contract scenarios.
  • Own the business case for new service lines and care offerings, including market sizing and financial modeling, and manage the launch plans for new states by coordinating clinical, credentialing, growth, and payer workstreams.
  • Design company goal-setting, progress measurement, and leadership team alignment processes for scaling.
  • Act as a representative for founders in meetings they cannot attend, critically evaluate decisions before implementation, and ensure organizational alignment on commitments.
  • Manage the creation of board and investor materials, including board decks and investor updates, ensuring the underlying data is accurate and the narrative is compelling.

Benefits

  • Direct exposure to all aspects of building and scaling a Series B healthcare company, including payers, finance, clinical operations, growth, and the boardroom.
  • A defined growth path into functional leadership as the company scales.
  • The opportunity to contribute to a mission focused on expanding access to high-quality mental healthcare for young people.
  • Competitive compensation, equity, and benefits.
