About The Position

Beacon Biosignals is seeking a Director of Product Design to lead and grow its shared Product Design function, which supports the company’s EEG devices and other hardware, mobile applications, web applications, printed materials, and internal business processes across logistics, support, and clinical operations. The role leads a team of three senior product designers and sets the vision, operating approach, and growth plan for design as the company scales. It is a hands-on player-coach position, expected to model strong design practices alongside the team. The Director reports directly to the VP of Platform. The role spans design prioritization across hardware, mobile, web, print, and business processes; collaboration with cross-functional teams; creation of design standards and reusable systems; and rigorous documentation of design contributions to regulated products. The Director also owns the function’s headcount plan, budget, and vendor relationships, and develops the research practice needed to maintain understanding of patients, providers, clinical staff, trial teams, sponsors, and Beacon’s internal operations. Beacon supports asynchronous remote work and has office hubs in Boston, New York City, and Paris. Candidates based in Boston or the surrounding area are preferred. The base salary range is $200,000–$215,000, depending on experience, skills, and qualifications. Total compensation includes equity, PTO, and other benefits.

Requirements

  • 10 or more years of product design experience.
  • 4 or more years managing and developing designers.
  • Experience building or substantially maturing a design function.
  • A portfolio spanning hardware and software experiences, including physical devices, mobile apps, data-heavy web applications, and printed materials.
  • Experience or familiarity in medical devices, clinical diagnostics, real-world data, pharma/biotech, or related fields.
  • Experience working in a regulated industry and navigating the balance between iterative design and strict design controls.
  • Ability to coach senior individual contributors and provide feedback they respect and act on.
  • Ability to work hands-on when appropriate without defaulting to taking work away from others.
  • Experience designing service and business process experiences, including improving how an organization operates.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills, including aligning partners around decisions, tradeoffs, and evolving plans in regulated or quality-sensitive environments.
  • Bias toward simplicity and ability to impose structure at the appropriate time.
  • Comfort and demonstrated success working in a highly asynchronous remote environment.

  • Establish processes, standards, and shared systems, including a coherent design language, reusable patterns, and effective design reviews.
  • Ensure design work for regulated products is rigorous and well documented; partner with Quality and Regulatory on usability and human factors work for cleared devices.
