Director of Engineering - Databricks Commercialization & Marketplace

Databricks•Bellevue, WA
•$249,000 - $350,000

About The Position

The Director of Engineering leads the organization responsible for Databricks’ commercial engine, which supports pricing, contracting, rating and billing across major cloud providers. The role sets product and technology strategy for how Databricks commercializes its products, with the goal of enabling a fully automated, zero-touch order-to-cash flow and next-generation billing architecture. The Director serves as a strategic engineering partner to Finance, Product and go-to-market leaders and develops the leadership capacity needed to scale the organization. The organization spans pricing configuration; orders and contracts; subscriptions; usage rating; billing and financial processes; and the marketplace for third-party data and solutions. The role makes new pricing models and routes to market faster and safer to launch by building reusable platform capabilities, while maintaining high standards for reliability, correctness, security, compliance, SOX readiness, cost visibility and operational efficiency. The Director owns outcomes across revenue-critical, cross-functional programs, partners closely with Business and Finance to translate accounting and compliance requirements into engineering design, and improves Month End Close and audit readiness. The role also builds a strong management and technical leadership bench, develops leaders and engineers, and leads hiring for the Money organization at the Bellevue site.

Requirements

  • 12+ years of software engineering experience, including 6+ years leading engineering organizations and managing managers.
  • Track record delivering large, revenue-critical cross-functional programs on time and with high quality.
  • Technical depth in distributed systems and large-scale data pipelines, including the ability to discuss correctness, idempotency, reconciliation and data lineage.
  • Fluency in order-to-cash and finance concepts, including pricing and discounting, contracts, revenue recognition, invoicing, month-end close and SOX controls.
  • Experience earning the trust of Finance and Accounting leaders.
  • Strong product judgment, including identifying commercial platform gaps, shaping requirements with Product, and making build-versus-buy decisions.
  • Ability to communicate strategy clearly to executives and influence peers in Product, Finance, IT and GTM without direct authority.
  • Experience scaling an organization quickly while maintaining a high hiring bar, developing leaders and engineers, and keeping teams engaged on internal platform work.
  • BS in Computer Science or a related field.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in billing, payments, commerce, fintech or other systems where errors directly cost revenue or create regulatory exposure.
  • MS degree.
  • Experience with Kafka, Apache Spark, Delta Lake or cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure or GCP.

Responsibilities

  • Set and communicate the multi-year product and technology strategy for the commerce engine, including zero-touch order-to-cash and next-generation billing architecture.
  • Own full outcomes for revenue-critical, cross-functional programs, including dependency plans, ownership, timelines, quality standards and escalation of risks.
  • Build reusable commercialization capabilities for pricing models and routes to market, including credits, commits, conditional benefits, marketplace and partner billing.
  • Maintain reliability, correctness, SOX and compliance readiness, security, cost visibility and operational efficiency alongside product delivery.
  • Partner with Business, Finance, Technical Accounting, Revenue Operations, and Strategy & Execution leaders to translate financial and compliance requirements into engineering design and improve Month End Close and audit readiness.
  • Grow the organization by establishing strong engineering managers and tech-lead managers, clear subteams, domain boundaries and ownership; coach managers and support career development.
  • Lead hiring for the Money Bellevue site, source and close senior engineering and management talent, place hires across Money teams in the company's interest, and help raise the engineering hiring bar.
