About The Position

The UW Medical Center – Harborview has an outstanding leaderships opportunity for a Director of Clinical Operations, Surgical Services. This position is expected to take rotating call with other leaders in the department. The Director of Clinical Operations, Surgical Services at Harborview Medical Center provides leadership for safe, high-quality, and efficient perioperative care within the Main Operating Rooms of a Level 1 Trauma and Verified Burn Center. This role oversees a complex, high-acuity environment operating 24/7 and is responsible for the integrated management of Operating Rooms, Ambulatory Surgery Unit (ASU), Post-Anesthesia Care Units (PACU), Intraoperative Neuromonitoring (IONM), and Anesthesia Technologists. In partnership with nursing, anesthesia, and surgical leaders, the Director drives patient flow, optimizes surgical throughput, and ensures compliance with regulatory and clinical standards. The position is accountable for operational performance, including staffing alignment, clinical documentation integrity, use of surgical scheduling systems, and data-driven quality and performance improvement, while fostering a culture of patient safety, accountability, and continuous improvement across Surgical Services.

Requirements

  • Graduate from an accredited school of nursing.
  • Master of Science in Nursing or related field.
  • Five or more years in senior leadership experience in a hospital based surgical service department.
  • Have/obtain a WA state RN license or MSL.

Responsibilities

  • Directing, Managing, and Coordinating all clinical and operational aspects of Harborview’s: operating rooms, Pre and post anesthesia, pre-anesthesia clinic. and all ancillary support programs.
  • Maximize OR capacity and block utilization.
  • Remove barriers that may prevent expansion or volume growth.
  • Participate in hospital level business development activities to shape reasonable targets, expectations and strategic opportunities surrounding perioperative care.
  • Monitor and maintain the performance practice standards and work with an interdisciplinary team to ensure that defined targets and performance standards are met.
  • Meet or exceed all key performance indicators established for the OR by enforcing industry recognized practices for staff and physician workflows.
  • Assure that the activities within the operating room follow local, state, and federal regulatory requirements.
  • Participate in the development and maintenance of a comprehensive Infection Control Program.
  • Participate in budget development and monitoring.
  • Recruit, retain and hire qualified candidates.
