Director, Marketing Sciences

Gilead Sciences•Foster City, CA

About The Position

Gilead is seeking a Director, Marketing Sciences for GDSI Oncology Integrated Insights, supporting gynecologic cancers, small cell lung cancer and selected oncology pipeline opportunities. The role integrates forecasting, analytics, primary market research, secondary data and competitive evidence to inform commercial strategy, clinical and development decisions, launch readiness, lifecycle planning and investment choices. This is a hands-on Director role. The person will own both the strategic narrative and technical analysis: frame decisions and uncertainties, choose fit-for-purpose methods, test assumptions, build or adapt analyses as needed, and communicate concise recommendations to senior cross-functional stakeholders. The role also partners with global and regional teams, represents GDSI on relevant commercialization, indication and asset forums, manages research and analytics vendors, and helps improve oncology portfolio processes and capabilities. The position owns long-term strategic forecasts and scenario planning for GYN, SCLC and assigned pipeline assets; leads qualitative and quantitative research; assesses secondary data and competitive evidence; and supports indication and pipeline planning. It also involves rigorous model review and governance, coaching colleagues and contractors, and developing consistent, efficient and credible decision support across the oncology portfolio. People Leader accountabilities include creating inclusion, developing talent and empowering teams.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree and 12 years of relevant experience, or a Master's degree and 10 years of relevant experience, or a PhD and 8 years of relevant experience.
  • Hands-on expertise in strategic forecasting, commercial analytics, and qualitative and quantitative market research in biopharmaceuticals or healthcare.
  • Ability to independently understand, audit, modify and build patient-based and revenue forecast models in Excel.
  • Depth in oncology market dynamics, clinical evidence interpretation, treatment sequencing, launch planning and lifecycle strategy.
  • Ability to synthesize varied and imperfect evidence, identify important assumptions, test alternative explanations and make clear recommendations under uncertainty.
  • Experience with pharmaceutical data sources such as IQVIA/IMS, epidemiology, claims or patient-level data, treatment-pattern studies and chart audits.
  • Strong cross-functional leadership and ability to influence without authority, resolve disagreement and align commercial, clinical, medical, finance, market access, corporate development and affiliate stakeholders.
  • Executive communication skills, including explaining technical model logic and uncertainty in concise, decision-relevant language.
  • Strong project and vendor management skills, including prioritization amid tight timelines and changing business needs.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with enterprise forecasting platforms; Forecast Horizon experience is preferred.
  • Experience in gynecologic cancers, lung cancer, antibody-drug conjugates or oncology pipeline strategy.
  • Advanced degree in business, economics, statistics, data science, life sciences, medicine or another relevant quantitative discipline.
  • Significant pharmaceutical or biotechnology experience, including substantial direct work in forecasting, analytics and market research.
  • Experience supporting global launches, pipeline assets, indication expansion and senior governance decisions.
  • Oncology experience across both commercial and development-stage questions.
  • Experience leading matrix teams and developing colleagues; direct people-management experience is beneficial but not required unless designated in the final organizational design.

Responsibilities

  • Act as an objective insights partner to Global Strategic Marketing and cross-functional teams supporting gynecologic cancers, SCLC and selected pipeline assets.
  • Frame ambiguous business questions as explicit decisions, hypotheses, evidence needs and analytical workplans, with ownership, timing and decision criteria.
  • Integrate forecasting, analytics, market research, competitive intelligence, epidemiology, clinical evidence and affiliate perspectives into a coherent market view and strategic implications.
  • Present findings and recommendations to senior stakeholders, distinguish evidence from judgment, surface uncertainty and drive alignment on decisions and next actions.
  • Represent GDSI on relevant commercialization, indication and asset forums and prioritize insights work according to strategic and financial consequence.
  • Own long-term strategic forecasts for GYN, SCLC and assigned pipeline assets, incorporating epidemiology, patient segmentation, eligibility, treatment rates, share, uptake, duration, compliance, access, price, launch timing and competition.
  • Explain forecast level and trajectory, identify key assumptions, and reconcile patient, unit and revenue outputs across indications, geographies, regimens and time periods.
  • Design base, upside, downside and event-driven scenarios and quantify direct and second-order effects across indications, products and shared patient pools.
  • Audit, modify, extend and troubleshoot Forecast Horizon and Excel-based models, and build fit-for-purpose models when existing architecture cannot answer the business question.
  • Use analytical methods such as waterfalls, variance bridges, sensitivities, tornado analyses, scenario comparisons and input comparisons to validate drivers and expose uncertainty.
  • Maintain transparent assumption inventories, source documentation, change logs, model controls and quality checks to ensure analyses are reproducible and auditable.
  • Set global research and analytics priorities based on decisions, knowledge gaps and the potential value of additional evidence.
  • Lead qualitative and quantitative research with physician, patient and payer audiences, including treatment-flow research, segmentation, drivers and barriers, positioning and message testing, product attribute assessment, demand estimation and launch-readiness research.
  • Analyze and triangulate secondary sources, including patient-level data, prescription data, epidemiology, treatment patterns, chart audits and competitive evidence.
  • Evaluate population definitions, business rules, sample limitations, and clinical and commercial plausibility of findings.
  • Translate comparative product profiles, clinical outcomes, safety and tolerability, administration, access, evidence maturity and competitive timing into defensible adoption and share assumptions.
  • Partner with regional and local Insights teams to incorporate market-specific evidence while maintaining globally consistent definitions, assumptions and forecast logic.
  • Support GYN studies and strategy through forecast ownership, market development insights, launch-readiness research, competitive assessment and evaluation of follow-on opportunities.
  • Support SCLC studies and indication planning through treatment-flow and sequencing analysis, drivers-and-barriers research, launch scenarios, forecast updates and competitive assessment.
  • Lead opportunity assessments, target-product-profile interpretation, demand estimation, scenario valuation and evidence planning for selected oncology pipeline assets and external opportunities.
  • Make patient-flow logic and treatment-history assumptions explicit, particularly where prior ADC or class exposure could affect addressability, sequencing, adoption or duration.
  • Conduct structural, calculation and reasonableness reviews of key models and analyses, identifying issues such as double counting, inconsistent populations, hidden constraints, manual overrides, broken links, circularity and unsupported assumptions.
  • Challenge disconnects among target product profiles, evidence, demand research, competitive assessments, analogs, forecast assumptions and revenue outcomes.
  • Manage external research and analytics partners, ensuring methods fit the decision and deliverables meet technical and business standards.
  • Coach colleagues and contractors on forecast logic, model hygiene, research design and executive communication.
  • Improve the consistency, efficiency, rigor and credibility of GDSI processes, templates and decision support across the oncology portfolio.
  • Create inclusion, develop employee talent through coaching and feedback, and empower teams by aligning goals and removing barriers.
