About The Position

The Director of Intergovernmental and Regional Affairs orchestrates the external influence of the City to secure the legislative, fiscal, and partnership outcomes required to achieve the strategic priorities for the City of Edmonton. This pivotal leadership role informs and influences the decisions of other levels of government on matters that impact the municipality. By establishing key relationships with partners across government, business, and industry, the Director ensures that the vision and priorities of the City are articulated with clarity and impact. Reporting to the Chief of Staff, the Director oversees the execution of the Intergovernmental Affairs Strategic Plan and transitions the team from a reactive service provider into a proactive strategic hub. This role leads a high-performing group of Senior Policy Advisors to ensure a unified voice for the City while navigating complex multi-jurisdictional landscapes. The successful candidate will foster vertical and horizontal integration across all levels of government, positioning Edmonton as a recognized municipality of influence through a robust and proactive advocacy framework.

Requirements

  • Experience, knowledge, training, and/or education in Political Science, Public Administration, Communications or a related field
  • Significant government relations and/or intergovernmental relations in a senior leadership role within a large, complex organization
  • Experience managing multi-disciplinary teams accountable for large, politically sensitive and integrated policy in a complex system with multiple partners
  • Experience working with municipal policy, provincial, and federal legislation in a multidisciplinary context
  • Demonstrated experience leading and managing change, building organizational talent and capacity, and empowering resources to achieve outcomes
  • Combinations of education and experience may be considered

Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership to a high-performing team of professional Senior Policy Advisors
  • Influence decisions and secure legislative, fiscal, and partnership outcomes from all orders of government
  • Develop and implement the centralized Intergovernmental Strategic Plan, ensuring alignment with City Council priorities
  • Serve as the expert advisor to City Council and the Executive Leadership Team regarding complex policy and strategy matters
  • Build and sustain coordinated, long-lasting relationships with elected officials and business partners across all levels of government including Indigenous communities
  • Implement systems to oversee all corporate advocacy, guaranteeing a unified City-wide narrative and approach
