About The Position

Patreon is seeking a Director, Indirect Tax to join their Finance team. This role will be responsible for all indirect taxes across the business, including marketplace sales taxes, ESS, VAT, GST, and JCT. The position is hands-on and will be integral to tax operations from collections through remittance. The Director will collaborate with Product and Engineering teams, as well as the broader Finance team, to scope, design, and enhance the company's indirect tax handling within its products. The Finance team at Patreon ensures the business runs efficiently, compliantly, and with integrity as they scale globally. The Tax team manages Patreon's global tax obligations end-to-end, partnering closely with Product, Engineering, and the rest of Finance to build scalable processes that keep pace with a fast-growing, international creator platform.

Requirements

10–12+ years experience in indirect tax.
Intimate knowledge of VAT/GST and similar transaction taxes.
Prior experience with electronically supplied service providers and marketplace providers.
Strong experience and knowledge in U.S. GAAP, FAS 5, and internal controls.
Experience with informational reporting (Forms 1099, 5471, etc.).
Direct prior experience with interpretation and application of developing law.
Proven success in tax controversy management and settlement.
Previous experience performing tax research and providing technical advice on U.S. state and international tax issues.
Self-starter, with the ability to manage multiple deadlines and responsibilities.
Team leader, able to shepherd projects from beginning to end.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
Detail-oriented and able to effectively organize and manage multiple responsibilities.

Responsibilities

Join a small but mighty tax team guiding a fast-growing, world-class Creator-oriented company.
Be our expert on all things indirect tax.
Lead the preparation of indirect tax returns as well as supporting calculations, work-papers, and payments, ensuring all external deadlines are met.
Be able to clearly explain our tax obligations to internal and external stakeholders, and help build a path towards full compliance with those obligations.
Act as a first point of contact for organization and Creator/Patron tax queries. Help develop resources to allow Patrons and Creators to understand and comply with tax obligations across the world. Do the best we can to demystify what should be a pain-free and straightforward process.
Keep abreast of legislative updates and initiate changes on our platform to ensure compliance.
Manage tax controversies, including providing response to various information document requests from tax authorities, coordinate with local tax advisors on reviews, strategize the audit plan and quantify tax/reserve impact to financial statements.
Prepare monthly account reconciliations and reporting schedules, providing commentary and variance analysis.
Work closely with management and external auditors to ensure the company is compliant with the latest accounting guidance, FAS 5 reserves and SOX.
Research and analysis identifying and exploring indirect tax opportunities and exposures related to global footprint expansion, systems and controls, refunds and cash flow management and projections.
