Overview The Director of Health & Fitness is responsible for defining and leading Planet Fitness' enterprise fitness strategy across clubs, digital experiences, fitness programming, education, content, and emerging wellness initiatives. This role serves as the organization's primary fitness subject matter expert and trusted advisor on topics including exercise science, strength training, healthy aging, recovery, nutrition, behavior change, weight management, and overall wellness. The Director of Health & Fitness partners closely with Operations, Marketing, Product, Franchise Support, Corporate Clubs, Communications, Analytics, and Member Experience teams to develop innovative fitness experiences that enhance member engagement, confidence, and long-term exercise adherence. This individual also serves as the functional leader of the Planet Fitness Trainer network and plays a key role in identifying, developing, and implementing new fitness programs, concepts, and wellness initiatives across the Planet Fitness system. This role follows a hybrid schedule and requires regular, in-person work at our Boston, MA or Hampton, NH office. Our hybrid model is M/T/W in office and TH/F are optional work-from-home. Candidates must reside within commuting distance of one of these locations. Fully remote work is not available for this role.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Exercise Science, Kinesiology, Sports Medicine, Public Health, Nutrition, Health Promotion, or related field required
  • 10+ years of progressive leadership experience in fitness, wellness, health, coaching, exercise science, or related disciplines
  • Deep expertise in exercise science, strength training, recovery, nutrition, healthy aging, weight management, and wellness best practices
  • Demonstrated knowledge of emerging trends, including GLP-1 medications, digital fitness, wearable technology, and consumer health and wellness
  • Experience developing fitness programs, education strategies, coaching models, and content initiatives
  • Proven ability to evaluate new concepts, develop business cases, and influence strategic decision-making
  • Experience building partnerships with industry experts, healthcare organizations, and external stakeholders
  • Strong analytical and business acumen with the ability to leverage data and insights to drive decision-making
  • Extremely detail-oriented, efficient, and organized with an exceptional ability to establish priorities and objectives.
  • Exceptional presentation and communication skills along with the ability to communicate effectively across all levels of the organization, including executive leadership.
  • Able to establish and maintain effective, collaborative work relationships with diverse individuals, internally and externally.

Responsibilities

  • Leads Agile delivery teams responsible for developing and implementing technology solutions across the organization.
  • Facilitates Agile ceremonies including sprint planning, backlog refinement, daily stand-ups, sprint reviews, and retrospectives.
  • Partners with Product Managers and Technology Leads to prioritize work, align delivery plans, and ensure successful execution of team objectives.
  • Establishes realistic sprint and release plans based on team capacity, velocity, dependencies, and business priorities.
  • Removes obstacles and impediments while fostering accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement across delivery teams.
  • Facilitates feature decomposition, estimation activities, forecasting, and delivery planning to support prioritization and execution.
  • Manages project risks, issues, dependencies, and resource constraints while proactively escalating concerns that could impact delivery timelines.
  • Collaborates with Product Management, Technology Leadership, and PMO teams to ensure alignment with project goals, timelines, budgets, and organizational priorities.
  • Ensures adherence to project delivery methodologies, governance standards, and PMO processes.
  • Supports project budget planning, forecasting, resource management, and time-tracking activities.
  • Partners with Product Management, Technology Leadership, and PMO teams to support portfolio planning, delivery governance, executive communications, and status reporting.
  • Develops and communicates delivery updates, forecasts, risks, dependencies, and recommendations to leadership and business stakeholders.
  • Maintains project and team artifacts utilizing approved tools and platforms, including Jira, Confluence, Smartsheet, and related systems.
  • Coordinates cross-functional efforts and manages interdependencies across multiple teams to ensure successful project outcomes.
  • Mentors and coaches Scrum Masters and team members on Agile principles, frameworks, facilitation techniques, and best practices.
  • Drives continuous improvement efforts through retrospectives, actionable follow-up plans, and measurable outcomes.
  • Develops and monitors Agile delivery metrics and dashboards to improve team effectiveness, quality, and predictability.
  • Contributes to the development and adoption of Agile standards, tools, and best practices across the Technology organization.
