About The Position

The Director, Business Strategy – Transportation will shape and drive the strategic agenda for Walmart Transportation, translating enterprise and supply chain priorities into clear roadmaps that improve service, cost, reliability, and scalability across the network. This leader will identify opportunities, build decision frameworks, lead cross-functional initiatives, and ensure disciplined execution from concept through rollout. The ideal candidate brings a strong strategy foundation—often developed in management consulting, corporate strategy, or a similar environment, with the ability to influence and deliver results in a complex, fast-moving operating model.

Requirements

  • Strategy and problem-solving expertise with experience in management consulting, corporate strategy, or a comparable role leading structured problem solving, executive-ready storytelling, and measurable business impact.
  • Transportation and supply chain acumen with the ability to quickly understand (or prior experience in) transportation operations, network performance drivers, and the levers that improve service and cost at scale.
  • Strong analytical capability including comfort with KPIs, financial modeling/forecasting inputs, and translating data into clear insights, tradeoffs, and recommendations.
  • Proven change leadership with experience driving cross-functional initiatives from concept to implementation, including stakeholder alignment, change readiness, and adoption.
  • Executive communication and influence—able to synthesize complex topics, create crisp narratives, and influence senior leaders and diverse partners without direct authority.
  • Program leadership and prioritization skills to manage multiple workstreams, set clear milestones, and deliver outcomes in a dynamic environment.
  • Values-driven leadership with a strong commitment to integrity, accountability, and operational excellence.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Statistics, Social Science, Communications, or related field and 6 years’ experience in retail merchandising, operations management, or related area OR 8 years’ experience in retail merchandising, operations management, or related area.
  • 2 years’ supervisory experience

Responsibilities

  • Set the vision and strategic execution plan for Transportation by conducting industry, market, and competitive analysis; defining strategic priorities; establishing success metrics; and communicating progress, risks, and outcomes to senior leadership and key stakeholders.
  • Build decision-making frameworks that clarify tradeoffs across service, cost, capacity, and speed—enabling consistent, data-driven decisions for network strategy, carrier strategy, fleet/asset utilization, and operating model improvements.
  • Lead enterprise-scale change initiatives by defining the desired future state, validating value and prioritization, developing implementation plans, assessing readiness, managing stakeholder expectations, and ensuring adoption from pilot through full execution.
  • Drive process and performance improvements across Transportation by identifying barriers to performance, leveraging customer and operational insights, benchmarking best practices, and overseeing multiple concurrent initiatives that improve reliability, productivity, and end-to-end outcomes.
  • Prioritize and execute key business strategies by leading cross-functional programs that impact store, DC, and corporate processes; shaping communications and change enablement; and ensuring training and content support successful rollout.
  • Provide overall strategic direction and operational rigor by translating business objectives into actionable plans, incorporating cost and forecast inputs, aligning resources, measuring outcomes, and continuously identifying improvement opportunities.
  • Model integrity and accountability by embedding Walmart’s values into programs and practices and fostering an environment of trust, transparency, and high standards.
