Director, Analog Design

Analog Devices•Austin, TX

About The Position

The Director of Analog Design in the Digital Business Unit leads a small team of analog engineers developing critical analog IP for complex system-on-chip products. The role combines hands-on technical expertise with people leadership, portfolio execution, and cross-functional influence. It is responsible for delivering robust oscillators, ADCs, DACs, PLLs, power-management circuits, and low-power architectures from concept through high-volume production. The director owns analog and mixed-signal IP delivery across architecture, specifications, design, verification, layout, characterization, qualification, and production release. The role leads system-level architecture and low-power strategy, manages multiple projects and IP developments, and establishes sound design, review, reuse, and methodology practices. It also partners with cross-functional teams on integration and supports silicon validation, production problem-solving, roadmap development, hiring, performance management, mentoring, and succession planning.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated success leading, coaching, and retaining a small team of analog or mixed-signal IC designers and developing future technical leaders.
  • Deep knowledge of transistor-level design and mixed-signal integration in CMOS SoCs, with expertise in several relevant areas such as oscillators, ADCs, DACs, PLLs, clocking, references, regulators, power management, and low-power circuitry.
  • Ability to translate product requirements into analog specifications, partition functions across analog, digital, firmware, and test domains, and make power-performance-area-cost tradeoffs.
  • Strong understanding of power domains, sequencing, retention, power gating, standby and wake-up behavior, leakage reduction, and mixed-signal operation across dynamic supply conditions.
  • Mastery of SPICE-based simulation, statistical and corner analysis, noise and stability analysis, extraction, layout review, DRC/LVS, reliability, and design-for-test considerations.
  • Proven ability to plan and deliver multiple IP and SoC programs, manage priorities and dependencies, assess risk, and drive decisions under schedule and resource constraints.
  • Ability to align analog, digital, verification, physical design, systems, test, applications, process, packaging, and firmware teams without relying solely on direct authority.
  • Track record leading bring-up, characterization, yield improvement, failure analysis, and resolution of complex technical issues through production.
  • Ability to connect technology choices and staffing investments to product roadmaps, customer value, portfolio priorities, and business outcomes.
  • Clear, credible communication with engineers, senior leaders, customers, and partners, including technical reviews and executive-level recommendations.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
  • Typically 15+ years of relevant analog IC design experience, including substantial experience with CMOS SoC development.
  • Prior direct people-management experience leading a small analog design team.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree or Ph.D.
  • Experience managing senior technical contributors.
  • Demonstrated success delivering multiple complex analog or mixed-signal products from definition and architecture through tape-out, silicon validation, qualification, and high-volume production.
  • Hands-on design depth in multiple relevant areas such as oscillators, ADCs, DACs, PLLs, references, regulators, power management, and low-power design.
  • Experience with analog/digital interface definition, behavioral modeling, mixed-signal verification, physical-design collaboration, and top-level SoC integration.
  • Record of building teams, developing engineers, improving design methodology, and delivering through changing priorities and constrained resources.
  • Evidence of technical innovation through successful products, reusable IP, patents, publications, or recognized contributions to analog and mixed-signal design.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, coach, and develop a small analog design team; set priorities and foster accountability, collaboration, and career growth.
  • Own delivery of analog and mixed-signal IP for Digital Business Unit SoCs from architecture and specification through design, verification, layout, characterization, qualification, and production release.
  • Direct design of SoC functions including oscillators, clock references, ADCs, DACs, PLLs, clock-generation circuits, power-management blocks, monitors, biasing, reset, and low-power control circuitry.
  • Drive system-level architecture and partitioning while balancing performance, power, area, cost, schedule, reuse, manufacturability, and product risk.
  • Establish design and review practices for specifications, modeling, simulation, layout, verification, and signoff across process, voltage, temperature, aging, mismatch, noise, and parasitic variation.
  • Partner with digital design, verification, physical design, systems, product, test, applications, process, packaging, and firmware teams to define interfaces, power intent, clocking, reset, calibration, trim, testability, behavioral models, and silicon bring-up plans.
  • Lead low-power strategy, including power-domain partitioning, power gating, retention, sequencing, dynamic power reduction, standby modes, wake-up behavior, and analog performance during supply transitions.
  • Manage execution across projects and IP developments, allocate resources, track milestones and dependencies, assess technical and staffing risks, and drive closure of critical issues.
  • Guide IP reuse and methodology improvement through scalable architectures, documentation, design automation, verification approaches, and lessons learned.
  • Support silicon validation and production by leading root-cause analysis and corrective action for complex lab, yield, reliability, and customer issues.
  • Influence product and technology roadmaps by translating business and customer needs into analog capability plans, investment priorities, and differentiated SoC solutions.
  • Build organizational capability through hiring, performance management, succession planning, mentoring, and effective use of internal and external design resources.
