About The Position

Mile High United Way is seeking a Director, Accounting and Financial Reporting to manage key accounting and reporting functions. This role involves budgeting, forecasting, financial and regulatory reporting, internal controls, risk management, and compliance. The Director will also support payroll, time & attendance, and employee benefits, present to the Board of Directors and Finance/Audit committees, assist with treasury and cash management, and serve as a member of the Leadership Team. This position will lead, manage, coach, and mentor a team of up to four staff members. The Director will ensure robust policies, procedures, internal controls, and segregation of duties are in place for effective program implementation and flawless audits. Collaboration with program leaders, senior leadership, HR, and IT is expected to enhance and integrate finance, HR, and IT functions. The role also focuses on creating and sustaining a positive and high-performing work environment within the Finance department.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or related field required.
  • 5+ years of broad finance and accounting experience, preferably in a nonprofit organization with a budget of at least $10 million.
  • Hands-on experience in a complex non-profit organization with multiple programs and a high volume of financial transactions.
  • Progressive leadership responsibilities overseeing accounting and finance professionals and staff.
  • Keen analytic, organization, and critical thinking skills for strategic data interpretation.
  • A track record in managing government grants related to compliance, accounting, and reporting.
  • Applied knowledge of non-profit accounting theory.
  • Proficient in preparing spreadsheets with excellent comprehension and reconciliation skills.
  • Experience with writing accounting processes, policies, and procedures.
  • Excellent written, oral, and strong interpersonal communication skills.
  • Well-organized, strongly committed to accuracy, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and operate effectively under time and work volume pressure.
  • Ability to adapt to changing business needs in a dynamic environment.
  • Strong customer service skills.
  • Ability to work independently within a team environment.

  • Advanced Microsoft Office Suite, including strong Excel skills.

  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license is preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor and analyze accounting data for accurate and timely consolidated financial reporting, including monthly interim reporting, annual financial audits, A-133 audits, and IRS 990 filings.
  • Manage the forecasting and management of cash flow to ensure financial predictability and sustainability.
  • Manage all aspects of the monthly financial accounting close process, including reconciliations, receivables, payables, accruals, and journal entries.
  • Direct and lead the work of financial accounting team members, including mentoring and assisting in job development and growth.
  • Reconcile balance sheet accounts monthly and clear reconciling items timely.
  • Analyze assigned complex programs, including developing budgets and monitoring multiple sources of funding and matching requirements.
  • Lead the production of financial schedules, account analysis, and other relevant information for audits and financial reporting.
  • Lead presentations and communications with the Finance Committee of the Board of Directors.
  • Reconcile operating bank accounts, including journal entries and account reconciliations, ensuring adequate controls and cash management practices.
  • Recommend and implement improvements to department processes, reporting, and software to enhance functionality, efficiency, and customer service.
  • Lead adherence to, research of, and implementation of financial accounting objectives.
  • Perform other duties as required.
