About The Position

GHD is seeking an experienced Principal Mining Projects Director to provide leadership in delivery, governance, and assurance for complex environmental programs supporting the mining sector. This role is ideal for a seasoned professional who excels in regulated environments and has a strong track record of delivering compliant, defensible, and repeatable projects for owner-operators. As a Principal Projects Director, you will act as a trusted advisor to clients and be comfortable operating at the intersection of technical delivery, regulatory compliance, and program governance. You will possess a deep understanding of US and Canadian mining laws, consent orders, and reclamation criteria, and know how to integrate assurance and quality control, verification, and documentation into daily operations, so compliance is built-in from the design rather than observed at inspection. Success in this role requires cross-functional thinking, judgment, determination, and the ability to lead multidisciplinary teams in ambiguous contexts, while maintaining schedules, quality, and regulatory certainty. Requirements

  • Demonstrated leadership in delivering complex or high-risk projects within regulated environments.
  • Excellent understanding of project governance, assurance and verification processes, and document controls.
  • Experience managing multidisciplinary teams, vendors, and subcontractors.
  • Strong planning, reporting, and stakeholder communication skills.
  • Experience with PMBOK-aligned tools, such as communication and reporting plan templates, Work Breakdown Structure (WBS)-based planning, and structured project status reviews.
  • Experience with integrated data pipelines and dashboards that support compliance and performance visibility.
  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Engineering, Geology, Environmental Science, or a related field.
  • Holding (or in the process of obtaining) a professional engineer's license from the Ordre des ingénieurs (OIQ) or a geologist's license from the Ordre des géologues du Québec (OGQ) will be considered an asset.
  • More than 10 years of progressive experience in environmental or mining project delivery, including leading complex, high-risk, or regulatory-driven programs, including environmental remediation and site assessment, report writing, data management and interpretation, project coordination, and client relationship management.
  • Hold the ASP Construction card.
  • Ability and willingness to travel to meet clients as needed.
  • Experience with high-volume recurring programs where standardization and automation are used to improve efficiency.
  • Good knowledge of analytical dashboards and data management practices that support compliance tracking and decision-making.

Nice To Haves

  • Holding (or in the process of obtaining) a professional engineer's license from the Ordre des ingénieurs (OIQ) or a geologist's license from the Ordre des géologues du Québec (OGQ) will be considered an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Approve project planning and ensure execution plans are tailored to objectives, including scope, schedule, resources, risks, and stakeholder communications.
  • Lead monthly project status reviews to confirm regulatory status, schedule adherence, technical progress, risks, and subcontractor performance; assign corrective actions and document their closure.
  • Maintain documentation and traceability: ensure deliverables are tracked, issued and received transmittal slips are logged, and revision tracking is maintained for key deliverables including plans, analytical datasets, reports, submissions, meeting minutes, and corrective actions.
  • Ensure communications, reporting plans, and schedule control are defined at initiation and planning, and then actively tracked to meet accountability obligations within prescribed timelines.
  • Oversee vendor and subcontractor governance, including the use of pre-qualified vendors, review of work plans and procedures, and verification mechanisms in line with deliverable requirements.
  • Enforce deliverable verification and quality requirements prior to any external use; ensure competent person verification and reviews, and Director approval are completed and documented in the project workspace.
  • Collaborate with the Program Manager for escalations, limits of authority, and alignment with program-level governance and performance indicators.
  • Promote a culture focused on health and safety, compliance, and continuous improvement, where controls are integrated into ways of working rather than added as an afterthought.
