This role involves assisting individuals in maximizing their strengths, interests, and abilities, upholding their personal rights, and providing emotional support. The Direct Support Professional (DSP) will support people to meet personal goals, engage in respectful communication, and encourage social connections within the community. Responsibilities include the supervision, protection, and care of individuals, maintaining program guidelines, and facilitating learning in fire safety. The DSP will ensure health, wellness, and safety by managing crisis situations and adhering to policies. Support is provided in various settings according to individualized service and behavior support plans, utilizing core competencies for individuals with varying needs. The role requires ensuring the implementation of person-centered plans, including protective oversight, Behavior Support Plans (BSPs), and Staff Action/Life Plans. Maintaining a clean, safe, and organized therapeutic environment, utilizing safe handling procedures, and implementing infection control protocols are also key. Specific tasks include assisting with personal care, ADLs, medication administration, teaching skills, supporting advocacy, communication, and dispute resolution, facilitating ethical decision-making, meal preparation, and transporting/escorting individuals. The DSP will develop an understanding of specialized clinical knowledge for specific needs, implement Behavior Support Plans, and collect/summarize data on behavior. They will observe and report changes in behavior to the clinical and leadership team, serve as a member of a team, and complete necessary trainings and certifications. Documentation includes reviewing communication logs, making entries in electronic health records, and completing other required paperwork accurately and within timeframes. The role utilizes foundational teaching skills and understands behavior as communication. Compliance with all regulatory requirements, including HIPAA, is essential. Reporting maintenance and safety concerns, consulting with program leadership, and participating in team meetings are expected. The DSP will utilize approved YAI and OPWDD training techniques for challenging behaviors and may provide coverage for other staff, potentially at other locations. Participation in treatment plan development and operating a YAI vehicle for transportation may be required.
