The Direct Support Professional (DSP) assists individuals with intellectual/developmental disabilities (I/DD) in maximizing their strengths, interests, and abilities, while upholding their personal rights and providing emotional support. This role involves building positive relationships, encouraging socializing, and facilitating community connections. DSPs are responsible for the overall supervision, protection, and care of individuals, ensuring their health, wellness, and safety, and managing crisis situations in adherence to policies and regulations. They implement person-centered plans, provide personal care, administer medication, teach skills, support advocacy, plan and prepare meals, and transport individuals for various activities and appointments. The position also requires managing personal allowance funds, developing specialized clinical knowledge, implementing behavior support plans, collecting and reporting data on individuals' behavior, and collaborating effectively within a team. DSPs must complete and maintain all necessary trainings and certifications, accurately document services using electronic health records, and comply with all relevant regulatory requirements, including HIPAA. They are expected to report maintenance and safety concerns and may be required to provide coverage at other locations or work beyond scheduled hours to maintain minimum staffing levels.
