The Direct Support Professional (DSP) assists individuals with intellectual/developmental disabilities (I/DD) in maximizing their strengths, interests, and abilities, while upholding their personal rights and providing emotional support. This role involves supporting individuals to achieve personal goals, engaging in respectful communication, and facilitating social activities to foster community connections. The DSP is responsible for the overall supervision, protection, and care of individuals, ensuring their health, wellness, and safety by managing crisis situations and adhering to program guidelines and regulations. Key duties include providing personal care, assisting with daily living activities, administering medication, teaching skills, supporting advocacy, and facilitating ethical decision-making. The DSP also plans and prepares meals, transports individuals to various appointments and activities, and assists with purchases while safeguarding funds. This position requires developing an understanding of specialized clinical knowledge for person-specific needs, implementing Behavior Support Plans, and meticulously collecting and reporting data on individuals' behavior. The DSP works as part of a team, completes necessary trainings and certifications, maintains accurate documentation using electronic health records, and complies with all federal, state, and local regulatory requirements, including HIPAA. The role may also involve utilizing approved intervention techniques for challenging behaviors and providing coverage for other staff as needed.
