About The Position

First Student is hiring a Diesel Technician for its shop serving Jefferson Parish in Harvey, Louisiana. The role maintains and repairs school buses to help ensure passenger safety and vehicle reliability. It is full-time, year-round work on a Monday–Friday day shift. The starting hourly rate is $29–$34, depending on experience and qualifications, with additional hourly increases for ASE School Bus Series tests passed and maintained. A $2,000 sign-on bonus is offered, subject to conditions. The company provides ASE testing and training materials, CDL Class B training and licensing, and benefits including medical, dental, vision, and a 401(k) with company match. Requirements

At least 2–5 years of diesel or automotive maintenance and repair experience, or equivalent technical school education and experience.
Vehicle diagnostic and problem-solving skills.
Valid driver’s license.
CDL Class B, or ability to obtain it within 60 days of employment; company-paid training is provided.
Possess a mechanic’s tool set sufficient to complete assigned duties.
Willingness to participate in the ASE certification program.
Strong computer skills.
English proficiency for job-related training, safety communications, company policies, employment documents, and other communications.

Responsibilities

Maintain vehicles to ensure they are safe for passengers.
Diagnose and perform vehicle maintenance and repairs, including brakes and brake inspections, engine tune-ups, suspensions, drive trains, transmission clutches, and other repairs.
Perform preventive maintenance, safety inspections, and annual maintenance inspections.
Complete work orders accurately.
Assist with mobile emergency repair services when needed.
