About The Position

As a Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic with the Department of Transportation in Westmoreland County, you will take on meaningful work that keeps essential equipment ready for the road. This position focuses on repairing, inspecting, and maintaining diesel and gasoline-powered equipment to support safe and efficient county operations.

Requirements

• Successful completion of the commonwealth’s Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic Trainee program (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration); or Two years of journey level mechanic experience in the diagnosis and repair of automobiles, heavy trucks, or construction equipment, which includes one year of experience in the diagnosis and repair of diesel vehicles or equipment; or An equivalent combination of experience and training.
• Possession of an active Pennsylvania Class A or B Commercial Driver's License with the Air Brake Restriction (L) and Manual Transmission Restriction (E) removed, or equivalent.
• Possession of an active Medical Examiner’s Certificate in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Regulations on the first day of employment.
• Possession of an active Pennsylvania Class 1, Class 4, or Class 7 Inspection Mechanic Certification on the first day of employment.
• Ability to demonstrate successful operation of equipment with a manual transmission.
• Ability to obtain and maintain CDL endorsements and certifications necessary to operate specific pieces of equipment.
• Ability to obtain an active certification issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation in the operation of heavy trucks and loaders within the probationary period.
• Ability to perform essential job functions.
• Subject to Drug and Alcohol testing in accordance with Federal Regulations.

Responsibilities

• Repair engines, transmissions, brakes, and electrical components on various equipment
• Perform diagnostics, tune-ups, and system adjustments to keep equipment operating safely
• Conduct official safety and emissions inspections and complete required records
• Identify mechanical issues using diagnostic tools and determine correct repair methods
• Maintain a safe work area, use proper protective equipment and report hazards promptly
