The Department of Transportation, Somerset County Maintenance Organization is seeking a Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic with strong problem-solving skills and pride in high-quality work. Requirements

  • Successful completion of the commonwealth’s Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic Trainee program (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration); or Two years of journey level mechanic experience in the diagnosis and repair of automobiles, heavy trucks, or construction equipment, which includes one year of experience in the diagnosis and repair of diesel vehicles or equipment; or An equivalent combination of experience and training.
  • Possession of an active Pennsylvania Class A or B Commercial Driver's License with the Air Brake Restriction (L) removed or equivalent.
  • Possession of an active Tank Vehicle Endorsement (N).
  • Possession of an active Medical Examiner’s Certificate in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Regulations on the first day of employment.
  • Active Pennsylvania Class 4, or Class 7 Inspection Mechanic Certification on the first day of employment.
  • Ability to pass the Department of Transportation’s New Mechanic Training course during the probationary period.
  • Ability to perform essential job functions.
  • Subject to Drug and Alcohol testing in accordance with Federal Regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Repair engines, transmissions, brakes, electrical systems, and other essential components
  • Complete servicing, diagnostics and adjustments to keep vehicles and equipment operating safely
  • Perform official state inspections and complete repairs needed to meet required standards
  • Identify equipment issues using testing methods and tools to determine correct repair procedures
  • Make minor repairs and adjustments at job sites to support safe operation and reduce equipment wear
  • Maintain detailed work orders, inspection forms, and equipment service records
