About The Position

This position focuses on maintaining and repairing a variety of vehicles and equipment to ensure safe and reliable operation. The work supports transportation needs throughout the county and contributes directly to public safety. As a Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic, you will perform the following duties: Vehicle Repair: Perform repairs and overhauls on cars, trucks, tractors, and construction equipment Preventative Maintenance: Carry out scheduled maintenance, diagnostics, tune-ups, and system adjustments State Inspections: Conduct official state safety and emissions inspections and complete required documentation Equipment Diagnostics: Use diagnostic tools and procedures to identify problems and determine repair methods Work Area Safety: Maintain a clean and safe work environment while following safety procedures and reporting hazards Field Adjustments: Make routine adjustments and minor repairs to keep equipment operating safely in the field

Requirements

  • Successful completion of the commonwealth’s Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic Trainee program (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration)
  • Two years of journey level mechanic experience in the diagnosis and repair of automobiles, heavy trucks, or construction equipment, which includes one year of experience in the diagnosis and repair of diesel vehicles or equipment
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training
  • Possession of an active Class A or Class B Commercial Driver’s License with the Air Brake Restriction (L) and Manual Transmission Restriction (E) removed
  • Possession of an active Pennsylvania Class 4 or 7 Inspection Mechanic Certification during the probationary period
  • Possession of an active Tank Vehicle Endorsement (N) during the probationary period
  • Employees to pass the Department of Transportation’s New Mechanic Training course during the probationary period
  • Possession of an active Medical Examiner’s Certificate in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Regulations
  • Employees may be required to obtain and maintain CDL endorsements and certifications necessary to operate specific pieces of equipment
  • Mechanics are required to possess a basic set of tools, as a requirement to perform their job duties
  • Subject to Drug and Alcohol testing in accordance with Federal Regulations
  • Must be able to perform essential job functions
